[LIBRARYDIR] Virtual Chat Question

Hi Heather, here's the response of our reference lead librarian, Katie Cunnion:

Green River College virtual reference--
We are offering chat reference, email, and online (Teams) librarian appointments this quarter. You can see our "local" chat coverage on our hours listing-- it's the "Online Hours (Librarian Chat, Phone, and Email)" here: https://www.greenriver.edu/campus/hours/?location=Holman%20Library

Overall, we're finding our local chat reference to be very slow compared to our in-person reference (but in-person reference is down from where it was pre-pandemic too). We're discussing reducing our hours of virtual (local chat) coverage, but we haven't done that yet. We do offer email reference, and that has remained steady.

During Fall, we had a decent number of requests for online appointments with librarians (these are the 1-on-1 Teams appts) in the second half of the quarter when students had research assignments and papers. We're not seeing that same demand this Winter, but it's still a bit early in the quarter.

We’re curious about virtual chat usage at other libraries (ex. AskWa LibChat).



Our usage isn’t much and we’re wondering about other libraries.



How is your usage? Has anyone decided to drop their chat service? Has anyone added chat or something similar (text messaging…)?
