Hello and good morning,

I'm trying to get a handle on if and how other CTCs are filtering internet access. We have a fairly restrictive filter at Peninsula, which coming from a university environment is frankly shocking to me, but our IT director is convinced that this is how it's done at the community and technical college level. At least once a week I or a student in the library run up against a blocked site, mostly due to the way the site is set up to redirect or sometimes because of a blacklist, but other times because of content (eek! Major intellectual freedom concerns!).

Can you let me know if/how filtering is done at your campus?

Thanks so much,
Samantha

Say what?!!! No, I'm not aware of any other college filtering internet access. Well, other than Peninsula now. Wow...

We don't have filtering of any kind in the library or computer labs. I've never heard of pressure from our IT to do so, and the library would oppose filtering vigorously. Our policy of "academic use" for computers and the student conduct policy covers what we need to ensure that computers are available for school work.

Agreed - we have no internet filtering at Tacoma CC. Like Tim, I would throw a hissy fit over that one.

Best of luck with that,

Candice

No filtering at Renton Technical College. Your IT director might want to reach out to his/her listserv for other IT Directors and get an answer from his/her peers.

No filtering here and I'm shocked that any school is. I'm on board with others - this is a battle to take up and it is a decision that should be driven by Instruction.

If we can supportive in any way, let us know. Deb Gilchrist on Instruction Commission would be great to talk to about this...she is VP at Pierce and could have a peer to peer conversation with your VP.

No filtering at Renton Technical College. Your IT director might want to reach out to his/her listserv for other IT Directors and get an answer from his/her peers.

Subject: [LIBRARYDIR] Internet filtering?

Hello and good morning,

I'm trying to get a handle on if and how other CTCs are filtering internet access. We have a fairly restrictive filter at Peninsula, which coming from a university environment is frankly shocking to me, but our IT director is convinced that this is how it's done at the community and technical college level. At least once a week I or a student in the library run up against a blocked site, mostly due to the way the site is set up to redirect or sometimes because of a blacklist, but other times because of content (eek! Major intellectual freedom concerns!).

Can you let me know if/how filtering is done at your campus?
Thanks so much,
Samantha

No filtering here and I?m shocked that any school is. I?m on board with others ? this is a battle to take up and it is a decision that should be driven by Instruction.

If we can supportive in any way, let us know. Deb Gilchrist on Instruction Commission would be great to talk to about this?she is VP at Pierce and could have a peer to peer conversation with your VP.

No filtering here at Wenatchee. We do have more and more layers of software watching for scenarios where, for instance, someone receives a phishing email and follows a link to a malicious site, but that sort of thing is more likely to trigger an alert than prevent the site from loading. That's an information security issue, though, not a content issue. If you're just using an internet browser we're not filtering any sites. -Andrew
