Good Morning BFET Team,

I am forwarding the email below which highlights that TANF and SNAP students whom receive CARES funds will not have those funds counted as income against their benefits!!
Students should continue to report information to DSHS as per their client benefits letter.

Warmly,

Subject: CARES Act Educational Assistance and Public Assistance

Hi Erin and Ami,

Hope you are both doing well. DSHS has received questions on whether the emergency financial aid received from the CARES Act (Section 4504) is countable income against public assistance programs.

We have determined that as the emergency funds are funded under Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965, we can exclude this income per CFR 273.9(c)(3)(ii)(A). This income is excluded for cash and food assistance in compliance with WAC 388-450-0035(1)(a).<https://app.leg.wa.gov/wac/default.aspx?cite=388-450-0035>

Let me or Patrick Budde, TANF Policy Program Manager, know if you have questions.
