The BAC Capital committee invites you to participate in ~

Critical Race Theory in Institutional Planning and Campus Design: A Case Study Developed by Amara H. Pérez, Ph.D.

Friday January 22, 2021 from 9:00 AM – 10:30 AM

A 90-minute virtual, interactive, and dialogue-based presentation. The case study of Portland Community College offers a story of an exploratory endeavor to understand and transform the relationship between race and space at a community college.

In this session, educational leaders will hear from Amara H. Pérez, principle researcher and project coordinator, as well as student participants in the 2018 Space Matters research team.

Sharing tools, pedagogical exercises, and insights generated from her work with leaders, architects, and students, Pérez will discuss:

  1.  How Critical Race Theory (CRT) was used to examine campus space and planning and design practices
  2.  What CRT exposed, and
  3.  How CRT informed a new set of institutional practices.

Space Matters student co-researchers will present their reflections on the district-wide process, the impact on their own lives, and their perspectives on CRT as tool for socio-spatial equity in education.

Workshop Learning Outcomes:

  1.  Define CRT as an approach to equity and inclusion in planning and design.
  2.  Understand how traditional planning and design practices can act to reproduce racial and other social inequities in educational settings.
  3.  Identify tangible methodologies for putting into practice the theoretical tenets of CRT to disrupt racial and other social inequities in higher education.
  4.  Understand through students’ experiences the value and significance of CRT as an approach to campus design, community engagement, and student leadership.

This workshop has been approved by the Equity and Capital Budget committees of the Washington Association of Community and Technical Colleges and is sponsored by the Business Affairs Commission of the Washington State community and technical college system.
