Subject: Follow up on Winter Quarter Clinicals

Dear Colleagues,

As we look to Winter Quarter we know from the past eight months that planned clinical experiences in programs (dental hygiene, nursing, NAC, MA etc.) may experience changes.

Thanks to all of you as you have demonstrated amazing abilities to make adjustments to meet the needs of students.  Our clinical partners are dealing with the same set of circumstances with having to respond to changes based on current circumstances in the clinical setting. The circumstances are different all across the state which is another factor in planning.

I wanted to share with you what some adjustments our colleges are making to provide clinical experiences safely and meeting students' needs:

*Lake Washington Institute of Technology has delayed student clinicals until January 19.

*Lake Washington has received permission from the Nursing Commission to increase SIM education. This is particularly useful on a case-by-case situation when a faculty member or student has been exposed and cannot come to class.

*Bellingham Technical College is back-loading all of the clinical rotations as much as possible in order to have the best chance to be able to complete rotations.

*Bellingham Technical Colleges is also prioritizing our senior student rotations if site availability is slim.

In planning for Winter Quarter, remember Governor Inslee classified nurse educators and students as essential workers. Recently, the Nursing Commission and lead nursing educators, requested that the Governor issue priority vaccinations to these essential workers.

The Nursing Commission continues to advocate and suggest ways to remove barriers preventing students from accessing clinical sites, and so that students can graduate without delay.

Thank you for your continued dedication during this COVID era.  It continues to be a challenging time-your leadership through this is making a difference for our students and our state. Thank you!
