Subject: FW: Talking Points and FAQ for Email to WACTC re RealCollege Survey

Dear Chancellors and Presidents:

This email is a follow-up to my comments at the March WACTC meeting, encouraging you to participate in the HOPE Center's RealCollege Survey in Fall 2019. We wish to support Senator Patty Murray's efforts to address affordability in the re-authorization of the Higher Education Act by providing real, on-the-ground information about how students in our community and technical colleges struggle with food and housing insecurity and even homelessness. We know from colleges that have participated in the past that the results provide critical information that helps districts and colleges address these issues at the local level as well as supporting local grant proposals. If we get a critical mass of our colleges participating, we can use the data to support our advocacy efforts as well. The California community colleges for example, have used the data to support financial aid and support services for their students.

Below is an email from Liz Looker, Project Manager for the survey at the HOPE Center, providing more information. I have also attached an FAQ provided by the Center. There is no charge for the survey, but colleges are asked to provide $1,000 for 10 $100 awards by lottery for participating students as an incentive. The HOPE Center provides technical assistance and analysis of your survey results. You can sign up in May to administer the survey in the first four weeks of Fall quarter.

I copied Joe Holliday who is taking the lead on this effort for our system. Thank you for considering this request.
Jan

Hello Colleagues,

At colleges throughout the country, there is a rapidly growing awareness of the serious challenges that students face meeting their basic needs. This year the Hope Center for College, Community, and Justice provided surveys to several systems of colleges to inform institutional efforts to understand these basic needs. This built on our work in previous years where we found 42 percent of students were food insecure, 51 percent were housing insecure, and 12 percent experienced homelessness among community colleges surveyed.

With growing awareness of how basic need insecurities are impacting students, the Washington State Board for Community and Technical Colleges is partnering with the newly renamed Hope Center for College, Community, and Justice on the #RealCollege 2019 Survey. The Board is strongly encouraging colleges to participate in this survey which will provide both statewide and local data reflecting the unmet needs of Washington State students. Having a data-driven understanding of the problem can help inform how individual colleges support their students and, can also help inform legislative policy and resource decisions.

Attached is additional information about the #RealCollege survey opportunity. In early May the Hope Center for College, Community, and Justice will send you a brief sign-up form to participate in the #RealCollege 2019 Survey.
