[Wactclc-primo] Setting up Unpaywall in Alma/Primo

Amy,

I'm guessing that has to do with it not really being a "collection" that can be selected in the PCI, but rather a way of accessing open source content?

This is exactly the reason.

Unpaywall<I'm%20guessing%20that%20has%20to%20do%20with%20it%20not%20really%20being%20a%20"collection"%20that%20can%20be%20selected%20in%20the%20PCI,%20but%20rather%20a%20way%20of%20accessing%20open%20source%20content?> itself isn't a collection or set of citations. And also worth noting that Unpaywall<I'm%20guessing%20that%20has%20to%20do%20with%20it%20not%20really%20being%20a%20"collection"%20that%20can%20be%20selected%20in%20the%20PCI,%20but%20rather%20a%20way%20of%20accessing%20open%20source%20content?> is not a service or product from ExL, but an effort of an independent nonprofit. The unpaywall integration within the product exists because Primo/VE customers asked for it.

Technically, unpaywall is a specialty link resolver that takes a citation (say, from Primo search results) and attempts to locate an open access version of the citation.

So, a citation must exist before Unpaywall can take any action.

The advantages of activating Unpaywall in PVE that I see:

1. Offers an additional option for content, beyond those that might be otherwise exposed in PVE through your activated collections.

2. Gives you a visual cue regarding what of your paid content is actually also available in open access form. (Providing you with clues to follow up on, to determine whether some subscription or other could potentially be dropped)

3. Provides options in PVE for users who may not currently be affiliated/have an account with your institution

The downsides would be:

1. An additional point of information literacy knowledge that may need explanation or inclusion in info literacy classes

2. An additional link in PVE that could eventually break for some reason (bad citation, or functional issue on the unpaywall side)

To my knowledge, and as stated on their web site, Unpaywall does *not* link out to any of the "black market" content sites like sci-hub, that represent what are essentially unauthorized dumps of copyright-restricted content, usually obtained by stealing credentials from individuals affiliated with subscribing institutions of the content being targeted.

FYI...

I successfully set up Unpaywall<https://unpaywall.org/> yesterday as a new General Electronic Service using these instructions. It was very quick and easy. It shows up in the "Links" section of the record. https://knowledge.exlibrisgroup.com/Primo/Community_Knowledge/How_to_%E2%80%93_Add_an_Unpaywall_General_Electronic_Service_to_Alma%2C_for_Open_Access_links_in_Primo

However, if it is the ONLY way we have access to an article (not also available in one of our paid databases or in one of our activated open source collections) we are only seeing it if our "Expand My Results" filter is checked, unlike some of the other open access collections we have activated in the PCI. I'm guessing that has to do with it not really being a "collection" that can be selected in the PCI, but rather a way of accessing open source content? There has been some discussion about it on the listserv that I didn't fully understand. If someone has been following the discussion and understands the issues, please chime in!

Some examples of it in action, in our Primo, are:

1. When we also have it in a paid database collection (EBSCOhost Business Source Complete): "A national methodology to quantify the diet of grazing dairy cows" https://sbctc-olympic.primo.exlibrisgroup.com/permalink/01STATEWA_OLYMPIC/18dmjvi/elsevier_sdoi_10_3168_jds_2017_13604

2. When we do not have it in a paid database collection but do have it in another activated open source collection (Taylor & Francis Online - Journals - Open Access): "Methane emissions are lower from reindeer fed lichens compared to concentrate feed" https://sbctc-olympic.primo.exlibrisgroup.com/permalink/01STATEWA_OLYMPIC/18dmjvi/informaworld_s10_1080_17518369_2018_1505396

[cid:image008.jpg at 01D5E7F2.CC746660]

3. When it is the only full text option, and can only be found by using the "Expand my Results" limiter: "Transnationalization of teacher education: A new paradigm for Ontario?" https://sbctc-olympic.primo.exlibrisgroup.com/permalink/01STATEWA_OLYMPIC/18dmjvi/proquest2187608476
