[Wactclc-primo] FW: Webinar Recording: Age of Automation - How We Make Sure Content Stays Current

Here is a recording of yesterday’s ExL webinar on content management (links below).

The webinar was presented by the team (in Seattle) responsible for the Alma CZ. The PCI / CDI was not discussed, as that platform is handled by a different team.

The biggest take-away for me is the fact that the team currently works to manage data from over 7,000 providers. That’s a lot of relationships to manage and maintain. The only competitor to the Alma CZ / Summon right now is probably Ebsco, with EDS. If you want access to a managed metadata set representing large chunks of the subscription content universe, those are your choices.

The presenters discussed “then vs now”, where “then” represents the manual management of metadata by their team. And the “now” represents the move toward more automated workflows, first through simple scripts and use of other low-end technology. And more recently through large scale submission of data by providers via designed-for-purpose platforms on the ExL side. This transition from “then” to “now” started taking place in the late 2000’s.

Another take-away was a cornerstone white paper, written at Oxford in 2007. This white paper, “Link Resolvers and the Serials Supply Chain”, set the stage for the challenges in the area of metadata and link resolver manager, and suggests some paths for moving forward.

https://www.uksg.org/sites/uksg.org/files/uksg_link_resolvers_final_report.pdf

The summary of findings, the first pages of the white paper, is worth a read. Even more than a decade later, it still feels pretty relevant. I do think that some steps have been taken toward improving the electronic resource experience since 2007. However, the exponential growth in the amount of metadata continues to outpace available solutions. One proposal by the white paper is the development of a centralized metadata repository, something like WorldCat, but for electronic resource metadata. The white paper posits the development as an NGO-oriented project. However, to my knowledge, the only place where large metadata repositories are being developed are at for-profit organizations like ExL and Ebsco. (OCLC did several years ago begin putting effort toward metadata for electronic resources, including a full-text component like we have with the PCI. But I don’t hear people talking about OCLC in that context, so it doesn’t feel like they’ve put a lot of focus in that area.)
