[Wactclc-primo] Auto-truncation for a repository search?

At present, the new Primo UI does offer browse search, but it refers the user back to the browse search in the old Primo UI.

The new Primo UI will support browse search natively in the near future.

(adding wactclc-primo to this response, as it is Primo related)

Something that made all the difference for those of us that catalog was adding the Browse Search to our Primo UI (hopefully that’s available in the new interface, it just occurred to me that I haven’t checked…). This allowed us to search by call number, subject, etc and replicate some cataloging workflows that we used in Voyager.

Here’s a link to a browse search for wor* : https://wenatchee-primo.hosted.exlibrisgroup.com/primo_library/libweb/action/search.do?vid=WENATCHEE&fn=BrowseRedirect&searchField=subject&dscnt=0&searchTxt=wor*&dstmp=1488842830641

Another consortial discussion to warm my heart on a chilly day ☺

Lesley is correct, for searching in Alma:

The asterisk ( * ) wildcard character may be used in your search string if the asterisk is preceded by at least three non-special characters.

But, wildcards are not supported when the content contains a dash as in $a (Aleph)003858461UCD01-Aleph.

The question mark (?) is not supported as a wildcard character in Alma.

For searching in Primo:

You can include the following wildcard characters in your searches:

• ?—enter a question mark to perform a single character wildcard search. For example, type wom?n to search for records that contain the strings woman, women, and so forth.

• *—enter an asterisk to perform a multiple character wildcard search. For example, type cultur* to search for records that contain strings, such as culture, cultural, and culturally.

The system ignores wildcard characters placed at the beginning of search terms. For example, the system treats the search terms ?aying and *aying as if you had searched for aying.

So, some searches may actually be more doable in Primo than in Alma.

Hi Nina,

I’m not sure about truncation, but the * wildcard should work in Alma’s repository search:
“Please note that the repository search does support wildcards. For more information please see here:http://knowledge.exlibrisgroup.com/Alma/Product_Documentation/Alma_Online_Help_(English)/Resource_Management/Using_the_Repository_Search/Searching_in_the_Repository.”

Curious to hear if others know more!

Subject: [Wactclc-alma] Auto-truncation for a repository search?

Hi, all,

We have not discovered how to configure our repository searches to allow truncation of the search terms. In Voyager, this was easy to do (although the settings were specific to each PC) – it was in options>preferences>workflow>allow truncation for non-keyword searches. In Alma, we have also tried using wildcard characters such as ?, * and #, to no avail. (Maybe we just haven’t found the right ones?)

We are accustomed to typing in only the first few letters of a call number, title or subject, and returning a useful list of results. I know we can somewhat replicate this ability by using an advanced search and choosing various conditions (starts with, or equals, for example), but this isn’t as straightforward or speedy as what we did in Voyager.

Any tips for us?
Thanks very much,

Nina
