[LIBRARYDIR] eligibility for laptop check out

Hi Cheyenne,

We have over 100 laptops to lend.  We have enough so that they rotate pretty well.  We keep them in metal drawers and have a refrigerator magnet on the outside of each drawer.  When the drawer is empty, we remove the magnet so it is fast to see which drawers still have laptops in them.  Students check out laptops for one week.  When they bring them in and ask to renew, our policy is to check to see if there are any left in the drawers.  If not, we won't renew a laptop until the end of the day to give another student a chance to get a laptop.  I suppose that students can game that system, but they are pretty understanding that other students need access too.

When we first started out, we loaned laptops to the TRIO program.  Then we got enough to lend to the general population.  Then we added the I-DEA program.  The TRIO and I-DEA check-outs didn't last very long.  Now we loan to everyone.  The replacement cost is steep, though.

Hello all.
You have all been super helpful in sharing your various laptop lending/renting information in the past and I have a new and improved question about this process. How do you determine eligibility or priority for laptop lending? Meaning, is there a certain population of students who are higher priority or have first pass at using a laptop? How do you determine that? Or perhaps you don't at all and it is simply first come, first served?
We are gearing up for a lending program at RTC and this input would be greatly appreciated.
