[LIBRARYDIR] Need Stories Today before 3 pm!: BAS Library Stories Document

Our most successful BAS/library situation has been in Applied Behavioral Science, our first BAS program. The library was involved in program proposal and development from its early stages, and as a result, we have an established upper division contextualized information literacy course (ABS330, 5 credits) taught twice a year by a librarian. Students in the program routinely comment on the value of the course. IL is further integrated and reinforced in other courses. One of the benefits of this arrangement is that the ABS students develop a close bond with the library where they often seek support from librarians and collaboration with their peers. This program also has received annual funds for databases, books, and librarian support (in the form of release time).

We've met some challenges with more recent BAS programs in ensuring that promised funds are allocated, though so far, we receive funding by insisting on it: databases will disappear without subscription support. We've had good funding for start-up collections, but ongoing funds are uncertain. I also worry about raising the overall level of the collections to support upper division gen ed courses as we add them.

Instruction also requires vigilance: Our newest program, IT Networking, does not include an IL course inside within the 60 required courses. Instead, the program includes an "elective" with information literacy content. The course is currently under development, but we worry about whether it will be used.

Vivienne, I don't know how to add my story to the doc on the wiki, but I can just give it to you here. It's a positive story, which I thought might be helpful as an example of what campuses should be doing instead of what, it seems, many are doing.

At Tacoma CC we have a BAS in HIM and one in development in Community Health. Both have involved the library in the planning of those programs by:

* bringing us in on stakeholder conversations throughout the program development

* allowing us to work collaboratively with program faculty to determine appropriate and sufficient library resources

* allowing us to review the curriculum and determine where information literacy instruction is needed. In the HIM program, the library developed an LS301 research class that aligns specifically with the HIM curriculum. We are doing the same with Community Health

* making sure that the library is a required element of the curriculum committee process, so that library resources and support are vetted appropriately

* providing the library with a budget for any library resources that we need to purchase for those BAS programs

* providing the library with a budget for the development of and teaching of the LS301 class

I am very appreciative of the inclusivity in our BAS development here at Tacoma. I know that having a strong library presence in those programs benefits the students greatly and makes those programs more successful overall.

That's my story - a good one! ;)

Importance: High

Deans,
I realize this was a short turn around so no one has yet to add stories to the document I placed up on the wiki.

I'm actually at the BLC meeting now. And present at 3 pm.
So to cut to the chase, if you have a story, can you email me now?

Story brief - brief analysis of problem - suggestion for solution brief
All told I'm just looking for maybe 4-6 sentences - a brief paragraph.
If I could just get a couple of people to respond, I'd be delighted.

Thanks!
Vivienne
