Hello all,
I think we have had versions of these questions before, but if you could provide me with any information to the questions below, it would be greatly appreciated and help us with our programming.

Background:  Our librarians are guest teachers for a 2-hour, hands-on information literacy segment as part of the college's 2-credit College Success course.  We are trying to improve what we offer as part of that 2-hour segment and want to get some feedback about what other college libraries are doing along this line.

1.       Does your library teach/participate in a 1st year course or college success type course (something designed for new or returning college students)?  YES

2.       Is it credit bearing? If so, how many credits?  2

3.       How does your library participate in the course?  Varies by instructor [sigh].  Sometimes it is "navigation" such as this is the library web page and this is the (physical) library.  Sometimes it is a full-blown "how to do library research" session.

4.       How much time do your librarians spend on it? 50 minutes

5.       What are the information literacy-related learning outcomes for the course?  None as defined by the course outline.  As I mentioned above, it varies by instructor.  We tried to insert a career exploration module that would show students how to investigate various career options.  Some instructors adopt this and others don't.  We have been very assertive about the awful scavenger hunt assignments (one question was "what is the heaviest book in the library").

6.       How do you assess the session or work the students do?   This year, we collected the names of every student attending any library instruction session and their class line #.  We will track these students for student achievement and retention.

7.       Any other comments or suggestions?  Every student will be expected to enroll in the First Quarter Experience class.  It is being defined as a "navigation" class with expected outcomes of a written education plan, career plan, financial plan, and a life plan.  There is a written curriculum, but every instructor varies from it to some degree.  Until it gets standardized, we find that we have to be somewhat aggressive about being included.
