All,
Please see below for information on the recently released federal government report on hunger among college students. “This is the first federal report to acknowledge that campus food insecurity is a serious challenge, and it’s important that this message is being heard at the federal level.” Hoping this provides opportunity for policymakers to better understand the context within which many of our students are struggling! Thanks for your work in continuing to respond to these needs!
Best,

FOR THE FIRST TIME, FEDERAL GOVERNMENT REPORT ACKNOWLEDGES HUNGER IS A PROBLEM FOR
U.S. COLLEGE STUDENTS

Four studies by Temple University’s Hope Center for College, Community, and Justice cited for groundbreaking research on this subject

Wednesday, Jan. 9 (Philadelphia)—For the first time, the federal government today acknowledged food insecurity as a serious problem for American college students in a report titled "FOOD INSECURITY: Better Information Could Help Eligible College Students Access Federal Food Assistance Benefits”<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001NcvSXz2MYk8PcCQyXoPF38Nt34j38-TjMB4Hh8OSiEfjUKhe_iwsARXUD07Nx6b0tOxjZcYVYWkA_-KmG48m6nKYCqH-1UPWBCqxgGxr0LmyBLWIHlpze_FPsyE-3CkSKHw2wljr116nVoBJGxp5oPvUwcagfMERzNwKU-yID6k=&c=PrNOm5edPu9YFTEpVHD3W-CANRfofViISEToskUWeCD0SYTkBaISUw==&ch=KOpVDZjxTBm-r6Hh0XMDvi3BEP3QjlY6WcSvD5-XFBrWz88bU9za1Q==>. The report was released by the General Accountability Office (GAO), which researched the subject at the request of four U.S. Senators: Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA), Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-MI), Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), and Sen. Ed Markey (D-MA).
The Hope Center is among the organizations recognized in the report. Of the 31 studies reviewed in the GAO report, we led four of them, which constituted the majority of studies involving large numbers of colleges across the country. The GAO said of this research—and that of other organizations—that “increasing evidence indicates that some college students are experiencing food insecurity, which can negatively impact their academic success.”

“This is an important moment for those of us who have been hearing about hunger on campus from students, administrators, and faculty for a very long time,” said Dr. Sara Goldrick-Rab, founding director of the Hope Center. “This is the first federal report to acknowledge that campus food insecurity is a serious challenge, and it’s important that this message is being heard at the federal level.”
The four Hope Center studies—released under its previous incarnation, the Wisconsin HOPE Lab—cited in the report are:

The GAO report also describes the extent of food insecurity on college campuses, as well as the challenges students have in accessing Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits. The report recommends that the USDA’s Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) needs to do more to connect students with SNAP and to support state SNAP agencies in making it easier for college students to get the support that will help them complete degrees.

This is something that must happen at the federal level to help college students remain in school, on track to complete their degrees, said Dr. Goldrick-Rab. “We appreciate the GAO report’s emphasis on the need for policymakers to address food insecurity. Campus food pantries offer only an emergency response; it’s not enough. Systemic change is necessary and this would be an important step in that effort.”
