Hi Jason,

We, the Black Support & Solidarity Data Team believe your message lacks
empathy for BIPOC faculty, staff and students and is toxic to the equitable
environments being cultivated at the WA State Community Colleges. Being
able to disagree and process issues in a positive way can be edifying to
all sides of the argument. Positive and constructive arguments are always
encouraged. However, calling us leftist, non-liberals, making undefined
notions of racial purity in a group email is insulting to us as
professionals, scholars, educators, and change agents.

Since Reconstruction, those who wish to silo power and create a fear of
'blackness' have fallen back to labeling change makers as unAmerican. It is
ironic that on Monday, our nation celebrated the birth of a man who was
labeled as leftist, a communist and unAmerican as a way to marginalize his
impact. This type of name calling didn't work then and it definitely won’t
work now.

There are times when we must have the courage to speak and teach. There are
also times when we must be humble enough to listen and learn. The
experiences of black and brown people may not mirror your own, you may not
understand how we feel but when you find yourself in this place of
ignorance, stop, sit down and open your mind and heart to learning. This is
the true meaning of respect.

It is said that time and tide wait for no man. Progress also falls into
this category. Progress will not wait until people are ready, it just comes
and those who cannot keep up with changes are often left behind. Our eyes
will not be diverted from our objective to make Washington State Colleges
more diverse and equitable for our students.

As educators, we encourage our students to “do the reading” before they
respond to prompts given in class. Likewise, BSS asks that everyone
actually read SB 5194 in its entirety before they decide whether or not to
show support. We also urge everyone to read all of the given information
before replying all with harmful opinions.

Sincerely,

The Black Support & Solidarity Data Team
