These are great suggestions, Consuelo.

I was able to check in with IT and HR and on the surface, it doesn't appear that CPTC is experiencing this (but I'm looking deeper and seeing how we can run reports to verify). They provided helpful context:

  * In terms of permanent employees, HR was able to determine they all had race codes in the system prior to deployment. During the in-person training, a number of our employees updated their information. Every employee who attended the in-person sessions was asked to check this data and change it, if necessary. I didn't seem to be a theme.
  * We didn’t have students walk through their bio demo data, but we can do it when we do group registration.
  * CtcLink has a bunch of additional ethnicity codes over what was in legacy but most of the race codes from legacy had a corresponding value. It seems like the “defaulting to white” would only occur if the race code in legacy wasn’t found in ctcLink.

Hi, I had not heard of this - it did not happen during our conversion. I asked my VP IT about it and he had not heard about this issue either.

I would suggest:

  1. asking lots of questions about how that happened including how that default was selected.

  1. I would also suggest working with HR, IT, and IR to determine how they will support correcting and updating data - there are pretty major implications for having incorrect demographic data and that will have to get corrected.
  2. Being transparent with the community about what happened and what the college is doing to correct it.
  3. Offer instructions and support with updating information for the community.

This is very unfortunate!

In support,
Consuelo

Hello DEO family,

WWCC just went through ctcLink conversion a couple of weeks ago, and we're now learning that during the conversion students/employees without race/ethnicity info might have been defaulted to White in PeopleSoft. I'm curious to hear if this is something that others have experienced, and what approach you took to reduce harm in this experience of individuals being othered and opportunities for support.

Thanks,

Margarita
