Lesley,
We are just beginning to have this discussion surrounding how we process periodicals.  There are a lot of inconsistencies in our records at the moment, and we are not necessarily tracking efficiently when there may be a gap in service (missing issue).

Are you tracking in-house browses?
What method are you using in periodicals for entry (there are a couple of ways)?  We have be using the individual issue entry method, which takes up a lot of time.  The other method (which we are considering) is to enter them with the prediction patterns (as Wade mentioned earlier).  There is more setup on the front-end, but eases the processing and tracking on the daily side.  From a reporting side (analytics, budgeting, etc), that method has some merit.

How often do you change subscriptions? (New additions/drops?)

Dang, 200 is a higher number than I would have guessed.

It's a tough one.

With the continued crunch in library staffing, it's tough to keep everything covered.

Correct. We're thinking this would save time and money in materials.

How many physical subscriptions does Pierce maintain?
About 200 across both campuses.

And is demand mostly for in-house use? (I'm assuming that's the case. Otherwise, why keep the subscriptions?)
Yes, in house checkout is much higher. As to why keep the subscriptions, that's a bigger question. A lot of our reference librarians are very concerned with losing access to physical periodicals. Serials subscriptions have been a big topic of conversation this year!

We're looking for ways to streamline our serials work as the number of issues we circ is much smaller than the number of issues we process.

I'm looking into the process for Creating Items while in Manage Patron Services, and it seems pretty straight forward!

Is anyone else doing this already? If so, how's that working for you?
