Friends and Colleagues:

Please see the message from the brilliant and talented Paul Horton of the Athena Group. Paul is offering his CoResolve Course, which covers the foundational principles of Deep Democracy for Leaders, fully online.
Paul's trainings always provide me rich opportunity for learning and unlearning when it comes to leadership.

I had the good fortune to take the CoResolve training a few months before COVID-19, and I'm so glad I did.
The training gave me a number of excellent and concrete strategies that have really come to my aid during the complexities and all-new adaptive challenges of this time.

I know Paul will be happy to answer any and all questions you may have.

With gratitude,

Jennifer

Greetings. I’m pleased to announce my first CoResolve course since Covid (Oct 13–15 2020 - 8:30am–1:00pm PST). Probably like many of you, I’ve really learned a lot in recent months about designing and delivering powerful content via Zoom. While not quite as sweet as being face-to-face, I know that this course will still be impactful. I hope that some of you will be able to join me.

I’m even more excited to be co-teaching this course with my friend and colleague Ipek Ütün. Ipek has over 20 years of experience both in corporate marketing and as a Trainer, Facilitator and Coach. She supports leaders, relationships and teams in this regard using different methods, which she defines as creating dialogue, enhancing wisdom and enabling change.

These trainings are small and intimate. The course flyer is attached. I’ve also attached a list of testimonials I’ve received in the last couple of years.

Best,

Paul

Testimonials from Previous Courses

It's refreshing and uplifting to learn from someone like Paul who definitely knows his stuff and enjoys helping people learn and tackle their work at hand. Great experience and well worth it.

Paul taught us about conflict and ways to resolve it. He’s very good at explaining concepts and then applying those concepts with practice exercises. Very skilled in teaching, listening, noting important issues the group is focused on and making the training fit our specific job conflict resolution needs.

Another bonus to this training, is how Paul provides materials to continue learning after the class. Paul knows this topic and is well rehearsed in providing it.

Chris Schroedel, Washington State Department of Transportation

You know you’ve been in a powerful training, when you are shifted inside, or you have a new awareness you can apply regularly, or you are empowered with a new set of tools you can’t wait to use. With Paul’s CoResolve 2-day training I walked away with all of the above and then some! Paul is a true educator. He has a humble, engaging style for sharing his seemingly bottomless well of knowledge and insight and for facilitating learning through thoughtful, paced and relevant practice exercises. By the end of training, I was able to look up on the walls to the beautifully pre-prepared flip chart pages used instead of Power Point slides and realize how much I had deeply internalized. I am utilizing this daily, thirsty for more, and grateful for our cohort community of practice that has since self-organized due to the quality of space Paul created.

Abby Ruskey, Research Fellow, the U.S. Partnership for Education for Sustainable Development

The CoResolve training was exceptional. Paul is a very thoughtful and knowledgeable trainer who is very conversant on the ideas and concepts being shared. I learned a great deal, and had a lot that I knew intuitively, affirmed. There were also several discovery moments where my previous understanding was able to give way to a new understanding, that I believe will better serve me as a leader. Paul’s gentle way of bringing us all in and allowing us to practice in lieu of just watching (though he did a great job modeling) was powerful. I highly recommend this training and trainer!

Joelle Robinson, Climate Solutions

I highly encourage you to check out Paul's training! I've taken trainings with him in the past, and they've given me all kinds of new skills and information--I always walk away immediately applicable tools and strategies ... and many of them stand the test of time (that's how you know a training is really good!)

Jennifer Whetham, Assessment, Teaching, and Learning, Education Division, Washington State Board for Community and Technical Colleges

The training showed me that conflict isn’t the enemy, and that conflict sows the conversations that bring about change. I’ve typically shied away from arguments for the sake of peace and harmony, but I learned that debates can bring diverse inputs – ‘lowering the water line’ – that can move teams towards more successful outcomes.

Paul gave us skills for asking powerful questions, and for understanding that meetings need to have a clear and shared purpose with a degree of psychological safety. When Paul facilitated discussions that brought out our very real points of contention or agreement, it did not feel like we were lab rats or swimming in circles in a fishbowl – he gave us practical and actionable suggestions for having real and fruitful conversations outside the safety of the training environment.

Kate S., Washington State Department of Transportation

Paul: Thank you again for inviting me to attend the Co-Resolve training. It was inspiring, applicable, and healing to me. This week I was able to use the techniques in a standing meeting. This team routinely plays heated “ping pong” when discussing issues, much less trying to reach a consensus or make a decision.

At the end of the meeting, one of the team members came to me and said, “that was the best meeting we have ever had.” In summary, if you ever need a reference, let me know. Likewise, if you plan on doing additional trainings, I have a handful of folks I would like to send.

Lorinda Youngcourt, former King County Public Defender (from an unsolicited email)

The Deep Democracy/CoResolve training gave me some great concepts and tools I can use to help groups navigate conflict and find human-centered resolution. From picking up on signs of resistance to addressing obstacles to good communication, the training was filled with information I can start using right away. I highly recommend it for anyone who wants to deepen their understanding of group dynamics, develop their skills for more collaborative decision making, or resolve tension in one-on-one or group, team situations.

Spent two great days with Paul Horton<https://www.facebook.com/n/?paul.horton.1806&aref=1579312818784623&medium=email&mid=59c6021f7869dG4469773cG59c606b8d896fG52&bcode=2.1579399220.Abzbe_M6ouMr0IGUz6E&n_m=paulvhorton%40gmail.com> getting trained in CoResolve and Deep Democracy methodologies, all about group dynamics, running strong meetings, resolving conflict and getting buy in from folks with minority opinions. Some really good stuff, I feel even more prepared for the next meeting!

Jim Cooper, Executive Director, United Ways of the Pacific NW and City of Olympia City Council Member

I left this training with a practical, insightful and intuitive framework for engaging ALL members of my work community (and beyond) in thoughtful and productive conversations around issues that matter. This 2-day training was designed in such a way that participants built community in a short amount of time and were able to build off of each other's experiences. This is a MUST HAVE training for anyone that works in an environment where decision must be made.
