Happy Friday, FACTC friends!

A new edition of Legislative News for the 2017 session has been posted…

Today marks the first cutoff of the 2017 session: bills in policy committees must be approved by that committee in order to continue on in the legislative process. The House version of the leasehold excise tax exemption bill was up for a hearing while the House version of the corrections education bill was heard before the House Appropriations Committee. Two system-request bills were passed out of the bill’s originating house this week: the Senate passed a bill 46-0 that would allow workforce associate degrees to be offered in prisons while the House passed a bill 97-0 that would make the Customized Training Program permanent.

State Board legislative intern Kate Hummel has this week’s interns update: Bills to decouple Services and Activities fee from tuition moving in House and Senate<http://www.sbctc.edu/blogs/legislative-news/2017/february/bills-to-decouple-services-and-activities-fee-from-tuition-moving-in-house-and-senate.aspx>

The Services and Activities fee, a fee paid by students alongside tuition, has been a major topic of discussion for the last two weeks. The reason for the hype over S&A comes from the introduction of HB 1433 and SB 5592. These companion bills will decouple S&A fees from tuition.
