Subject: Opportunity to host the next IDEAL fellowship cohort 4 at your college!

Greetings GPAC!

It was nice to meet and see you last week at our fall meeting. A special thank you to Dr. Lia Wetzstein and Dr. Leandra Cate from the Community College Research Initiative for their presentation on the Initiative in Diversity, Equity, Antiracism, and Leadership (IDEAL) Fellowship. We are excited to use what we have learned from their program evaluation as we look toward launching the fourth IDEAL cohort.

With the generous sponsorship from College Spark Washington, and in partnership with Rooted in Love<http://www.rootedinlove.education/ideal.html>, the Student Success Center will offer the fourth cohort of the IDEAL Fellowship in Winter quarter 2023. This virtual opportunity will take place using Canvas and Zoom.

The Guided Pathways IDEAL Fellowship is designed to encourage, empower and equip community college students to advocate for justice and equity in their courses and at their colleges. Fellows will participate in seminars that provide a foundation in justice-centered and anti-oppressive theory and scholarship, engage in problem and project based learning to identify and investigate campus policies that disproportionately impact hypermarginalized student groups, and/or find ways to improve an equity-centered policy on their campus. Fellows join a group of IDEAL alumni who continue to advance equity on their campuses and in their communities and may be eligible to receive a $1000.00 stipend.

We are currently seeking four colleges to participate for cohort four. We are starting with our esteemed GPAC colleagues in hopes that you can help influence the support for our future fellows who are making important recommendations to their colleges. We are hopeful you will volunteer to host the IDEAL fellowship on your campus.

What does it mean to be an IDEAL college?

  1. Together, we focus recruitment efforts at your college during the month of November to generate a pool of student applicants. (5-10 students will be selected from the applicant pool to join the fellowship).
  2. Your college will identify 1 administrator or faculty member to act as the IDEAL rep. This person volunteers to:
     * Attend an orientation and a meet and greet with the Student Success Center and Rooted in Love teams
     * Attend at least two seminars with the fellows
     * Help students find and use campus data relevant to their project
  3. Your college will help to get the IDEAL fellows in front of key-decision makers to present their final equity projects. Click here<https://youtu.be/InNH_T1LpWA> to see examples from the cohort three presentation.
  4. You gain a new opportunity to learn from and with students

We are hopeful that this iteration of IDEAL will be supportive of the equity efforts at your institution.

Please reach out to Ashley, amontenegro at sbctc.edu<mailto:amontenegro at sbctc.edu>, regarding your willingness to be an IDEAL College or with any questions or considerations.

We look forward to hearing from you soon.

In solidarity,
The Student Success Center team
