[Wsssc] In-person commencement

Good morning all,

SVC is hosting 4 ceremonies—1 at the San Juan Center, 2 in the Mount Vernon gym, and 1 in the local high school gym on Whidbey Island.  We added a second ceremony for our Mount Vernon campus this year and are not limiting guests.  We’ve also invited grads from 2020 and 2021 to participate.  No pushback from faculty or staff, although they are not required to attend.  Most are welcoming the opportunity to have on-ground ceremonies again.  Thus far, we are not requiring masks, although with rising cases, we may need to reconsider as we get closer to the ceremony dates.

EvCC is doing one big one in the Everett Arena (Angel of the Winds Arena) and their staff is doing all COVID protocol checking according their processes/policies. We did a drive through graduation last year and it was a hit, but according to students, they really wanted a traditional one this year. We are inviting this year and the 2 prior graduating classes to participate by RSVP only. No pushback from any students and staff are not mandated to attend. Tenured faculty are required according to their CBA and need prior approval from the VPI for any absence. This is also in the CBA from prior (pre-pandemic) years for any non-COVIDy type of absence.

We’re doing a live event but spreading grads and their guests out during the ceremony. We typically hold it at a local high school at their football stadium and don’t have to limit guests but because we had to make a decision in the winter, we decided to host on our campus, hold the event in our large auditorium and livestream the event to classrooms around campus for grads and their guests to watch together. Then, we’ll release grads by their classrooms and have them walk across the stage for their diploma. It’s a bit complicated but allows us to be in person in a more safe manner. The main concern we’re receiving is about limiting number of in-person guests. It will be interesting!

Good morning, WSSSC,

We are resuming our in-person ceremony at ShoWare in Kent, and it will be live streamed. Are you planning to have an in-person commencement this year? If you are having an in-person ceremony, are you getting pushback from faculty and/or staff? We’ve had minimal pushback and are navigating it as it comes, though we’re also paying close attention to increasing COVID cases. I’m curious as to what you all are doing.
