Subject: Recommendations and considerations for equitable distribution of Undocumented Student Emergency Aid funds

Good afternoon,

Please see attached for a memo from the DEI in WA Undocumented Student Work Team regarding recommendations for equitable distribution of the undocumented emergency aid funds from WSAC. This memo is being sent to the Financial Aid Council and Washington State Student Services Commission (WSSSC)?, but please feel free to distribute widely within our system.

Our work team was established one year ago as a temporary group to respond to COVID resources for undocumented students in the community and technical college system. However, our group has transitioned into a more long term committee to coordinate state level policy and collaboration to support undocumented students and communities. Our group is comprised of faculty and staff representatives from various ctc colleges, undocumented students, and several community groups. Some of our policy recommendations such as modifying the residency requirements in the 1079 standard have been incorporated in Senate Bill 5194?<https://app.leg.wa.gov/billsummary?BillNumber=5194&Initiative=false&Year=2021> which is currently moving through the WA State Legislature. We have also collaborated with MSSDC and other groups such as the WACTC equity committee over the past year to align our work. MSSDC also participated in drafting the attached recommendations.

In addition to these recommendations, our group has been working on a few system wide initiatives and would like to collaborate more with FAC, WSSSC, and other groups on policies and practices that impact undocumented students. We plan to meet with WSSSC soon and would welcome the opportunity to join other meetings as well. Additionally, our group holds open meetings every month and anyone interested can attend. Our work team also has space for additional college or student representatives if more colleges or agencies would like to join in this work.

Please let me know if you would like to join us in further dialogue on serving undocumented students in our system. We appreciate the opportunity to work with FAC and other groups to promote racial, economic, and educational equity for undocumented students.

Thank you,

?
