[Wsssc] FW: Reminder: Joe : The Hope Center offers new pathways for #RealCollege support

WSSSC: see below FYI, in case you didn’t receive it directly from HOPE Center. Looks like a good opportunity to keep the basic needs focus however the cost is $13K per institution and the State Board doesn’t have the resources to support it right now. We are working with WSAC (and HOPE Center is actually a consultant on the project) to develop a statewide student basic needs instrument, not sure of the timeline though.

Dear Joe,

The Hope Center Team and our partners appreciate all #RealCollege community members who supported our fall 2020 survey<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001ippbYxOZy6g1ecMztIref85Xw2kzlnJdh82oCaXLCf1E9RsbTOVtRFcBXL57w9fsZ8aXClQ0ALGo29HYUA83NudMHoLT93K-2OXBTZBLItNh18L9HXYv4sjn2Hkpl7rLjlVh7LYXESDvFvrMeRFdf3P2XTU3axKS2CLjK2Yc-fSrf0HvNWBRvSjH0Gm6zqgcvuGLFWbpYbI=&c=7ab2sPPq_oLI1YNMCr_8zLNEGFAMpeFBiznvEmI7roo-ffIG64KQ6Q==&ch=H0UN_R_9sqD9Ax_-u84cIlE6ysrRGXBAmz1MIEZO9ENbf_qy35RDew==&jrc=1> of nearly 200,000 students at colleges and universities. Your collaboration helped to shine a beacon on the challenges students faced during the pandemic and how we can embrace systemic efforts to shift support toward their successful degree completions.

On March 31, The Center also opened applications for The #RealCollege Institutional Capacity–Building Cohort<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001ippbYxOZy6g1ecMztIref85Xw2kzlnJdh82oCaXLCf1E9RsbTOVtRFcBXL57w9fslGpi4iWEfbkiX_E9aLdTPFcRu-GOubIz9zUEPcfgq2sSlLwCrqzP7dWNZWYV1esUH4SJJiqa6leLHXMUh2ZQFxybVlVXNyb9&c=7ab2sPPq_oLI1YNMCr_8zLNEGFAMpeFBiznvEmI7roo-ffIG64KQ6Q==&ch=H0UN_R_9sqD9Ax_-u84cIlE6ysrRGXBAmz1MIEZO9ENbf_qy35RDew==&jrc=1>, an opportunity to strengthen collaborations that assess, analyze, and address students’ experiences with basic needs' insecurity at their institutions.

The #RealCollege Institutional Capacity–Building Cohort (ICBC)

The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the critical role colleges play in meeting the basic needs of vulnerable students, from food to shelter to safety. It created a call to action to break through the bureaucratic silos dividing colleges from other social support systems that must work together to support our students. The #RealCollege Institutional Capacity–Building Cohort<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001ippbYxOZy6g1ecMztIref85Xw2kzlnJdh82oCaXLCf1E9RsbTOVtRFcBXL57w9fslGpi4iWEfbkiX_E9aLdTPFcRu-GOubIz9zUEPcfgq2sSlLwCrqzP7dWNZWYV1esUH4SJJiqa6leLHXMUh2ZQFxybVlVXNyb9&c=7ab2sPPq_oLI1YNMCr_8zLNEGFAMpeFBiznvEmI7roo-ffIG64KQ6Q==&ch=H0UN_R_9sqD9Ax_-u84cIlE6ysrRGXBAmz1MIEZO9ENbf_qy35RDew==&jrc=1> is designed to increase the organizational and programmatic capacity of colleges and universities so that they can strengthen and build integrated and collaborative ecosystems to meet students’ basic needs and promote academic success.

The #RealCollege Blog
This week, we had two #RealCollege Blog posts by members of the #RealCollege community.

On Tuesday, Michelle Miller-Adams of W.E. Upjohn Institute for Employment Research and Grand Valley State University wrote about how “free college” can support #RealCollege students across the country<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001ippbYxOZy6g1ecMztIref85Xw2kzlnJdh82oCaXLCf1E9RsbTOVtRN0PjcmSyd6F5IsM-XvkcHd4d0OLFuJBRR4ViFg_53y_qCtidGQZj8gdrPHwAcMisGd5uL-mCiks8Bid2pEvQQy7to_qiUszhirbfOsp5HfEx0z7cx_QHg8L9ftKDIW5Fbrx2nndnT5k2AcuogvbMuDhcQt0-1HwmlsZcEUzGTKkWT3cnyj05j0=&c=7ab2sPPq_oLI1YNMCr_8zLNEGFAMpeFBiznvEmI7roo-ffIG64KQ6Q==&ch=H0UN_R_9sqD9Ax_-u84cIlE6ysrRGXBAmz1MIEZO9ENbf_qy35RDew==&jrc=1>.

Staff Spotlight

The Hope Center Team is expanding and so are our talents.

This week, you can get to know Research Fellow Chloe B. McKenzie.

What is your favorite part of the work you do?

I love that we are doing something that isn't really being done. We get to shape new discourses and enhance solutions for #RealProblems that face #RealCollege students.

Favorite book of all time?

This is tough! It's a tie between Quicksand: And, Passing by Nella Larsen and The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd.
Who inspires you?

Shirley Chisholm is someone I find myself channeling every day. I stand on her shoulders and am so thankful for what she did to make my work possible.

Something surprising that most people do not know about you?

I played soccer in college and tore my achilles three times. But perhaps something more fun, I speak German and studied there for seven months. I really thought I wanted to be a polyglot (someone who is fluent in at least five languages), so I took a new language every semester in college in addition to German.

We talk a lot about hope being a strategy here. What is your hope for Higher Ed and the work that we do?

My hope for higher ed is that institutions take ownership of how they shape and influence students' financial experiences. My research demonstrates that institutional choices and policies (not just financial aid) have a significant impact on students' wealth-building capabilities, but more importantly, institutional choices and policies can sometimes be the epicenters of where financial trauma is transmitted and perpetrated. To better support students, my hope is higher ed will embrace our work to transform themselves for the betterment of students.

#RealCollege Issues In The News

For Many College Students, Pandemic Life is Disappointing. For Others, It is a Financial Crisis.
Our new #RealCollege survey was featured by Stephanie Saul in the New York Times! Read how our survey found that during the pandemic, many students “are hard put to pay for even the most basic necessities.”
