Colleagues: see information on the Student Safety Toolkit below, attached and at links provided. I will touch on this at tomorrow’s WSSSC meeting. Examples from Bellingham Tech and Clark are provided. Perhaps Michele and Bill can talk about what they are doing.

Hi Joe,

We had a good turnout from our CTCs. Key takeaways:

  * DOH is launching a toolkit this Friday, which will include videos, social media ads etc. that colleges can customize.
o The materials will focus on changing social norms. I'll share the link when it's available.
o DOH will do a "deep dive" into messaging research results on October 1. See attached email for a Zoom link.
o DOH plans to create an advisory group -- including students -- to provide feedback.

  * WSAC has created a Google site where colleges can share materials<https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1oC24O13-Wmcf5jfuQvul9mXVh63uG2Uw>.
  * All colleges already have signage, web pages etc... as part of their reopening plans. The greater need is for videos, social media assets, and peer influencing.
o Widespread agreement within the group that younger adults are more influenced by authentic messages from their peers. Someone suggested creating video messages from students who have contracted COVID, to counter the belief that it only affects older adults. DOH is considering a "peer pledge" approach.
o Our colleges reminded DOH that the average age of our students is 26, so messaging should not focus solely on young adults 18-24 living in dorms or Greek housing. They also asked about language translations.

  *   Examples shared by colleges:
o WSU shared its "Cougs Cancel COVID" materials. I've attached them here.
o Bellingham Tech and WWU mentioned their joint research and communications campaigns, in which students came up with fun, quirky, irreverent messages about "COVID in real life." They made an interesting point: Young people are getting resentful about all the statements indicating that they are selfish and irresponsible. In the Bellingham Tech/WWU research, students point out that they yearn for social interactions to boost their spirits and protect their mental health...many younger adults feel a great sense of loss because they couldn't experience the camaraderie and rite-of-passage of finishing up their senior years.
o Clark is providing faculty boilerplate information to put in syllabi about how to safety participate in in-person classes.
o CWU has created a “peer influencers” program with students and faculty/staff…they say it is working well.

Hi Ha,

I've reached out to DOH. They have already created some great videos and have more social media tools underway. Aaron Wyatt of WSAC is convening a meeting of higher ed folks to discuss how to use the materials. I'll let you know when it's scheduled.

Sounds like a nice project and happy to help connect to our student leaders, including Nadaa.

Laura - I'll wait to hear from you after you initial contact with DOH?

the governor asked John Wiesman, DOH, if his communications team could work with student leaders to develop a student safety video. John W said yes, they are already putting together a tool kit aimed at college students based on some focus groups. One of the students recommended the ability to customize the video with local institution logos or backgrounds.

Can you follow up with DOH communications folks? I’d like our colleges to be able to use this tool kit and video with our students. Work with Joe and Ha on deployment through WACTCSA and the colleges.

thx, Jan
