Good morning, WSSSC-



As Joe has shared at our bimonthly WSSSC meetings, a survey to support the work of House Bill 1355 (2018) created a legislative taskforce to examine counseling on community and technical college campuses in three areas: minimum standards for counselors, best practices in meeting the mental health needs of students, and student/counselor ratios. This Wednesday, September 16, a survey will be distributed to our presidents from SBCTC that seeks to assess several areas related to the taskforce’s work. Presidents are being asked to designate one person to coordinate your district or college response to the survey, which will be due by September 30. This is likely you!

Chancellors and Presidents:

We are writing to request your support with a survey that will be arriving next week. As you know, House Bill 1355 (2018) created a legislative taskforce to examine counseling on community and technical college campuses in three areas: minimum standards for counselors, best practices in meeting the mental health needs of students, and student/counselor ratios. Presidents Sheila Edwards-Lange and Rebekah Woods serve on this taskforce. Next week, on September 16, a survey will be distributed to you from SBCTC that seeks to assess several areas related to the taskforce’s work. We ask that you designate one person to coordinate your district or college response to the survey, which will be due by September 30. Your designee should ideally be an individual who supervises or manages the daily operations or otherwise has significant knowledge about your counseling or related services. While more than one person’s input may be needed to accurately complete the survey, it will be helpful for coordination purposes if there is one point of contact.

Taskforce membership also includes representatives of Instruction Commission (Matt Campbell, Pierce College) and Student Services Commission (Sue Orchard, Lower Columbia College), as well as faculty counselors from four colleges. Those constituencies will be made aware through their representatives that the survey is coming.  Joe Holliday, Director of Student Services, represents SBCTC on the taskforce and will be coordinating the survey.
