Today's Department of Homeland Security Announcement on DACA

Dear Community Members & Partners,
Today, July 28th the Department of Homeland Security<https://usilg.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8a20ce607fd62c5108e9d181d&id=b1e6291f3a&e=40fd64878c> announced the newest updates to the DACA program (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals). This announcement states that as of today, the DHS will:

  *   Reject all initial DACA and Employment Authorization applications,
  *   Reject new and pending requests for advanced parole that do not have exceptional circumstances, and
  *   Decrease the period of renewed deferred action from two years to one year.
We know this announcement brings discouragement and confusion among many mixed-status and immigrant families throughout the nation. We encourage everyone to remain hopeful and fuel this energy into advocacy and action!

Although there is no short-term benefit to applying for DACA, there are legal actions and class action lawsuits currently being contemplated and prepared by several national organizations, law firms, and associations. Those who have already applied or intend to apply and have had their case rejected may wish to be included in one of these class-action lawsuits.  It is possible that this may preserve an applicant’s eligibility to obtain DACA in the future even if the current administration attempts to terminate the program again.

Although DACA provides many benefits to DACAmented individuals, it is not a permanent solution, and legalization is needed now more than ever. Our hope is that we focus this energy towards the DREAM Act, the American Dream, and Promise Act, or some other legislation that will offer a pathway to citizenship! This will not happen, however, without some significant effort.
