WSSSC Colleagues: as promised during our meeting last week, here is more information about the RealCollege survey of student basic needs. The email below was sent by Jan Yoshiwara to your presidents and chancellors today.

Good news: we are indeed able to cover the $1,000 cost for every college that chooses to participate, thanks to College Spark Washington's generosity and Kristi Wellington-Baker's advocacy on our behalf. Please feel free to contact Liz Looker at HOPE Center directly if you have questions. HOPE Center will provide the link to the survey sign-up form, sometime next week.

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns at this point. I will be on a planning call with Liz and our policy research director Darby Kaikkonen next week to discuss the IRB component of survey participation. Darby is discussing it with RPC this week. It seems reasonable to proceed under Temple University's IRB approval, but that is a decision each participating college will make.

Chancellors and Presidents:

This is a gentle reminder about the opportunity to participate in the HOPE Center's RealCollege Survey of Basic Student Needs that I spoke to you about at the March WACTC meeting. The HOPE Center would like to hear from colleges wishing to participate, sometime this month. They will have a link to the survey sign-up form available shortly. At the suggestion of President Hiyane-Brown, we will send a similar reminder to WSSSC so that one other person at your college will be knowledgeable about the survey process. (Student Services Director Joe Holliday briefed them on the survey during the spring WSSSC meeting last week.)

We have good news regarding the requirement to request $1,000 from your Foundations for student participation incentives. Through the generosity of College Spark Washington and under the Student Success Center umbrella, SBCTC will be able to cover that cost for every college choosing to participate in the survey.

Liz Looker from the HOPE Center has offered to answer any of your questions if you wish to contact her prior to signing up for the survey. Thanks so much for considering participation in the RealCollege survey. Understanding the scope of our students' struggle with hunger, housing, and other basic needs is an important step in developing solutions at the college, system, state and federal levels.  I think the survey results will be meaningful and informative.  We hope to use these results in our advocacy work next year.
