Subject: Executive Director Search

This invitation, sent on behalf of the State Board, requests your participation in the Executive Director Search open forums scheduled for April 28th.  The State Board will interview two candidates for its Executive Director position at the Conference Center inside the Sea-Tac Airport at 17801 International Blvd., Seattle, WA 98158, Mezzanine Level. (Schedule, directions and parking information are at the end of this message.)  Attached are candidate bios.

Process Update:  Over 50 applications were received for the Executive Director position.  The Screening Committee’s review of the most competitive applicants resulted in interviews of five candidates on April 5th and 6th.   The Committee believes that the two semi-finalists it is recommending to the State Board are well qualified and represent good and diverse choices.  Those candidates are:


Jan Yoshiwara, Deputy Executive Director for Education, SBCTC;

Jack Hershey, President & CEO, Ohio Association of Community Colleges.



Attached is a summary of each candidate’s credentials.  Reference and background checks have been initiated and will be provided to the Board on April 28th. Interview Process:    The activities on April 28th are designed to further develop and provide candidate information for Board consideration and to position the Board to make a hiring decision during its May 10th/11th meeting.



Each candidate will spend two hours with the Board and one hour with stakeholders in an open forum.  Board interviews will consist of:



·         A structured segment during which a set of pre-determined  questions will be asked of each candidate;

·         An unstructured segment with questions specific to the candidates’ background; and,

·         Candidate questions of the Board.



The Open Forum will start at 8:30 a.m., with a brief orientation of the day’s activities and the process to share information with the State Board.  The first candidate will arrive at 9 a.m.  After meeting with the final candidate, forum participants have about an hour to meet in their separate stakeholder groups (i.e., Presidents, Trustees, Faculty Unions, community members, etc.) to summarize their feedback and select one or two representatives to meet with the Board.  Those representatives will cycle through to the Board to share their group’s perceptions of the strengths and weaknesses of each candidate with the Board.  More detail is available below.


Logistics:  The Open Forum will be in the London Room in the Conference Center inside the Sea-Tac Airport at 17801 International Blvd., Seattle, WA 98158, Mezzanine Level.


Forum Schedule – London Room:
8:30 a.m. – Public forum participant orientation
9:00 a.m. – First candidate (Jack Hershey)
10:00 a.m. – 12:45 p.m. Break and lunch on your own (outside food and drink are not permitted in the conference center)

·         There are eating options available pre-security in the airport terminal and several options located on International Blvd.
1:00 p.m. – Second candidate (Jan Yoshiwara)
2:15 p.m. – Participants discuss candidates
3:15 p.m. – Selected representatives meet with State Board to discuss candidates


Conference Center Directions:

·         From the “Ticketing” level the stairs and elevator to the Mezzanine Level are directly behind the Hawaiian and Lufthansa ticketing counter on your right.

·         At the top of the stairs, enter the Conference Center through the double glass doors on your left.

Parking in the Airport Garage:

·         Complimentary Parking is ONLY valid for General Parking in the airport garage on levels 1-3 and 5-8.  Complimentary Parking is NOT valid for the Terminal Direct/Level 4 of the airport garage.

·         When entering the airport garage, push the green button, take a parking ticket and find parking. (YOU MUST KEEP YOUR TICKET TO EXIT)

·         Park in General Parking (levels 1-3 & 5-8).  Park in the Yellow or Green section of the garage.  If you need an airline reference, park by Hawaiian Airlines.

·         Take the yellow or green elevator in the garage to the 4th floor and then walk across skybridge 1 to the main terminal.

·         Please note the issuing time on the parking voucher you receive in the forum room.  You must vacate the airport garage by that time.

·         When exiting the garage you must exit through a CASHIER LANE.

·         Give the cashier both the ticket you pulled when arriving in the garage and the voucher you received in the meeting room.  They will let you out of the garage for free.
