[Wactclc-primo] Saved searches in Primo VE and RSS

Good catch, John.

RSS feeds can be very useful, but they can also be tricky. I used to do a lot with RSS feeds, and they can “break” pretty easily, with one bad or misplaced character in a feed entry.

I’m seeing the same thing you are. Though, very occasionally, the feed will come through the URL for me, especially the first time I try using it on a newly saved search.

Which makes me suspicious that something is going on with the REST API interface that these RSS feeds are coming out of. Could be a performance issue. Or a functionality issue. Or a scale issue (maybe the size of the search results impacts feed generation, something like that)

I will open a ticket on this one. Since I’ve got some experience with processing RSS feeds via scripting, I think I can capture a good problem description for ExL to look at.

Meanwhile, you’re right that RSS feeds can be generated out of Alma as well. It’s been a while since I’ve used that functionality, so I’ll go back and review it, and post back to the list. And maybe cover the topic on next Tuesday’s call.

A couple of things about Alma RSS feeds… they only include Alma metadata, so no articles. And also, they are generated on a scheduled basis, so won’t get updated in real time, but instead on an interval basis (if my memory is accurate).

Assuming we can get some functioning RSS feeds out of Alma or Primo, those feeds can potentially be plugged into other platforms, like maybe Canvas or LibGuides, to offer some auto-generated title lists.

Subject: [Wactclc-primo] Saved searches in Primo VE and RSS

Clicking the RSS button on a saved search creates a feed that has only the title and no results. The link seems to be truncated. Tried to configure the discovery_rss_url parameter according to the Knowledge Center. No sure what is missing. Any ideas?
