That's good info, Amy. Nice to know there is a precedent for the effort.

Meanwhile, since you mentio ORCA... for those of you pining for the halcyon days of ORCA, I received this email in response to the ELUNA conference report I posted to librarydirs a couple of weeks ago.

I imagine some of you "old timers" know Eric:

I am Eric Palo.  I retired from being library director at Renton Technical College two years ago. I occasionally look in on the digest of the Librarydir listserv and saw your ELUNA report with the note about the WACTCLC name.  I was part of the former Inlex group that created ORCA and I invented the ORCA name.  (Stan Horton, temporarily back at Grays Harbor, may be the only other person who remembers back that far.  Although I think Tim might have been around at the time, but old memories are fading fast!)

Most people forget, or never new, that ORCA was an acronym for Online Research Catalog Authority, although we never really used that full name.

At the time I came up with ORCA I had a number of possibilities.  In response to something Tim sent out about three years ago I sent the full list of names out to Librarydir but I did not keep a copy.

Here are some that I remember:


OSIRS:         Online System for Information Research Services

ODEN:           Online Digital Education Network

WODEN:       Washington Online Digital Education Network

PARIS:           Pacific Academic Research Information Service

HELEN:          Higher Education Learning Environment Network

TALON:          Technical and Academic Library Online Network

You may also be interested to know that at the time ORBIS, the Oregon academic library group, merged with Cascade, the Washington academic library group, they tried to "steal" the ORCA name.  It was only forceful action by the then LMDC chair John Backes (once library director at North Seattle, then director at Shoreline, and finally Vice President at Shoreline before retiring) that prevented them from rolling over us.  (LMDC was the previous name for LLC.)

So, hope you enjoy this trip down memory lane.

A small group of us did this the first time the ORCA libraries went to Primo, because we all had to share one PCI and needed to accommodate all member libraries' subscription collections, while weeding out the junky, ahem...less useful, "free" collections.  We went through every single collection in PCI to determine which ones were actually good quality, didn't make you create an account first, were primary in English, etc. then sent out a recommendation to our member libraries.   I'll see if I can find our criteria and our final list, which might speed things along this go-around.   I would be interested again in participating if time allows.

Greetings, folks,

Last summer LWTech started activating open access collections in the Primo Central Index as a way to leverage freely-available, high quality information made available through the platform. The librarians at LWTech had several criteria for "turning on" and leaving on a collection (including ensuring the collection had actual items populating in Primo, that there was no paywall or login wall, and that the majority of the contents are in English-with some exceptions).

It's been a year and now Sue Wozniak and I are interested in looking at the efficacy and quality of the collections once again. We're looking at exploring the collections and collecting both quantitative and qualitative data on them, since Ex Libris doesn't do a good job at it. Even more importantly, we're interested in seeing what disciplines the collections are aligned with (based on what academic programs are run at our school).

If anyone is interested in collaborating, Sue and I would be open to a work group or other more organized initiative. The goal would be to get this completely done from start to finish in July and August (so it's a quick project), with the understanding that it would be revisited each Summer in new iterations.

Please reach out if you're interested in participating or have any general thoughts on the OA collections in PCI.
