[Wactclc-primo] Confusion about authority control in Primo

Yes, I remember the same thing, George.

That issue with the display of the 'g' indicator displaying in Primo caused us to turn off headings enrichments at some locations.

(It was an issue introduced in a Primo update over the summer.)

But I believe you are correct that the issue has been resolved.

Like Highline, we at Edmonds started to notice cross-reference headings being displayed in the details view in Primo in early June. To fix the display problem, we also chose to disable the Headings Enrichment feature.

I spot checked some of Green River's new titles and did not see any cross-referenced headings displaying. So, perhaps Ex-Libris has fixed the bug?

Actually, I shouldn't say they had to republish all records to fix the problem. Initially they turned off the Headings enrichment option and republished the records I used as the examples in the case, but I asked them to republish all records because I was worried that there may have been other irrelevant subject headings added to the records in Primo.

We had the Headings enrichment option turned on but earlier this year we noticed some of the records in Primo were given subject headings not really relevant to the subject headings in the Alma records. An example was that the subject heading "Eurasia" was added to a book titled Colonial America : a very short introduction. We submitted a case to SF and they turned the Headings enrichment option off and republished all records to fix the problem. But this was before summer, and I don't know if it was a one off issue.

Wade,

Thanks for this information. Green River was not in the first Co-hort. I doubt that any of us in the first Co-hort received this information previously.

Yes, the ‘headings enrichment’ setting should give you more what you want.

From the doc page I linked earlier:

This especially enhances the Primo search capability of nonpreferred (4XX) terms so that, for example, Mark Twain can be found with Samuel Clemens; and with the cross references to the Primo author and subject browse list, when the heading Samuel Clemens appears, it displays “See Twain, Mark.”

Does require republishing records after enabling the headings enrichment. You could open a ticket and ask them to republish everything, after you turn the switch.

Just FYI, Green River has headings enrichment enabled:

Hmmm…we haven’t looked into this yet, but I tried the author searches you recommended, Dale. We can confirm what you’re seeing. For Mark Twain, I got 494 results, but only 71 for Samuel Clemens. Like you, I had a different result set in each case, and I don’t see a Primo link between the two. When I get a chance, I’ll try the heading enrichment Wade recommended (probably not until next week). Obviously, our instance isn’t working as we’d hoped, either. Thanks for the heads up.

Subject: [Wactclc-primo] Confusion about authority control in Primo

Hello again,

We are newly concerned about how authority control, particularly for subjects, actually works, or doesn't work in Primo.

We are setting up local authority records for some local headings. In doing so we are discovering that any kind of "See" reference or "See Also" reference doesn't seem to do anything in Primo.

Have any of you seen any evidence that the cross-reference structure is or is not working in Primo?

We have tested this using a number of "See" or "See Also" references. Once example that we have used is the "See" reference of "Big Foot" for the heading of "Sasquatch" "Sasquatch" is used on records in our Alma catalog, and the heading is authorized when we look at the MARC records.

When we conduct a subject search in Primo for "Big Foot" we get results based on keyword searching of articles or note fields, but we do not get our records that have "Sasquatch" as the authorized heading. I have looked at a number of other catalogs and I cannot find any evidence of the "See" or "See Also" structure working.

Have any of you tested this concept? Try doing an author search for Mark Twain and then redoing the author search for Samuel Clemens. I get very different results with no link from Primo between the two names.
