[LIBRARYDIR] [EXTERNAL] - Appeals?

Hi all,

To piggyback on this question, do any of your libraries have a minimum threshold amount (e.g. $10 or $20) that fines/fees must meet before you start charging students (i.e. anything below that amount is automatically waived/forgiven)?

Best,
Pearl

Hi Claire,

We just developed a replacement fee waiver this quarter due to the much higher replacement fees that we’re now seeing with laptop checkouts. We notably use “Financial Hardship” as a waiver reason. We have yet to see it used, but we haven’t had it in place at the end of a quarter yet.

Our website is under construction, so we currently have our FAQ on a Public Canvas page<https://lwtech.instructure.com/courses/1364387/pages/lwtech-library-fee-waivers> that we can share with students. We do plan to add it to our Policies and Procedures webpage when the website is editable again in July.

Thanks for asking and I really appreciate hearing how others are handling this!

Katherine

Our appeals process is on the Overdue, Damaged, Missing, or Lost Materials<https://libguides.olympic.edu/c.php?g=232066&p=1540581> guide. We start with a verbal consultation with the Circulation Supervisor which is normally where the process ends. But, we do offer a Written Appeal if they aren’t satisfied with the response.

Thanks,

Erica

Hi all,

I hope your day is going well.

Do you have an appeals process where the criteria (for getting a lost item fee) are spelled out in a public place?

Our appeals process hasn't been formalized and our students don't know they can appeal a fine (for having lost an item). I think in the past, the circulation manager would listen to a student's story and then decide whether to forgive the fine. I'm hoping to standardize the criteria and publish them on the website. What do you think? Am I missing something? Thanks, Claire
