[LIBRARYDIR] [EXTERNAL] Re: Libraries and Bookstore Models

Hi Erin,
While we are currently not set up to incorporate bookstore services into the library (we are temporarily located outside of our true library space while major repairs are made to our building), our administration has expressed interest in exploring how to combine/co-locate the two areas. I wonder if this could be a discussion topic at LLC next week. If not, I'd be interested in an online discussion group to learn more about what others are doing, hearing, and thinking about this idea.

I received some clarification about the proposal presented in my previous email and wanted to share that here for clarification purposes:

"There was not talk of the library becoming a sales point for textbooks. What was discussed is that many publishers are putting their entire catalogs online for a nominal fee per accessor. Since that service is very similar to the current database management responsibilities of the library and that they would be available to all students it would make sense for the library to manage that. All those books would then become part of the catalog."

Have any of your libraries followed a similar model? How has that worked? What additional staffing needs did this present?

Good Morning,

Our colleges are in the stages of renegotiating our bookstore contract and shopping around for vendors. It has been proposed by some that the Library could be the keeper and distributer of textbooks and textbook sales. Understandably, that is not sitting well with many of our Librarians.

What are other college's bookstore models? How are your Libraries involved, or not, with the college bookstore? Do any of your Libraries distribute/sell textbooks? What bookstore vendors do your institutions use? We have a taskforce that's been developed and I want to bring back information from other colleges and their models.
