We decided to remove our gates about a year ago. Folks have asked about what we use now, and I found that email and have copied it here.

  1.  How long have we had the new system? We installed the system sometime in January 2022, so it is relatively new.
  2.  What are pros and cons? We like that it is small and simple. The old gate would go off occasionally and it was 99% never a person trying to take something from the library. The images are just abstractions, so privacy is good. The new item is relatively inexpensive and doesn’t have service contracts. That being said, the reason we now recommend the Avis item is that Geovision no longer supports their counter. It had some analytics features, but those were based on Microsoft Silverlight which was officially discontinued in 2021. Even though Silverlight is no longer supported, we feel the devices will work for a couple of years. We don’t think the Axis product would have the same issues. The Axis product is available in white or black, I believe, rather than our current one which is black and white/cream.
  3.  What is the price? The Axis counter is about $800. (It is $812 on CDW but they are usually more expensive.)  The Geovision counter was about $500
  4.  What is the maintenance? These don’t have maintenance like traditional gates. They do require firmware updates occasionally, which we work with our IT folks. (Installation was done by IT, as there needed to be internet and POE in the ceiling.)
  5.  How accurate do you feel it is? It seems to be accurate, and our Circ Manager has compared data from the gate with the new device and it seems to be in line. The new device tells us the time when people enter the library, so that helps us to figure out when custodians or public safety come in, etc. We don’t expect many folks to come in to the library at 3 am! While it does break down the data by hour, it does not separate entrance to and egress from the library. There was one time that the custodians left a vacuum cleaner in the entryway all day and it set off the counter many, many times.

I attached two photos of our counter, and they are almost invisible they are so small! The device is about 2” x 6”, and the Axis device seems to be of similar size. I have also included a picture of the type if image it sees. It’s quite abstract, but the image shows my arms and I am holding a phone.

We have Biblioteca, and they still work, but I'm not excited about them. They offer another product that only counts people, rather than setting off bells, that I am more excited about.

Those of you who have removed security gates or are in the process of doing so…  Do you have any suggestions for how to re-home or even recycle that equipment, once it’s been removed?  Or are these things just doomed to become part of the landfill?

Our gates (Bibliotheca) stopped working years ago. We are leaving them in as a visual deterrent and are about to go with the overhead Traf-Sys system. We have not had significant loss.

Our gate stopped functioning after COVID and it can’t be fixed. We haven’t removed it yet.  We are still stripping the books though in case we decide to replace it.

If you don’t have a security gate, what are you using for a gate counter?  I want a bi-directional version so it counts in and out separately.  Looking for recommendations.

We also used Checkpoint gates.

We are under construction right now for a retrofit and made the decision to just not use security gates going forward! 😬

We tested out dummy gates for a while at our smaller branch and had zero loss.

It's not a decision that works for every library, but the combination of factors made us really examine our loss ratios and we got admin support for the decision.

I'm sure this wasn't super helpful to you, but I couldn't resist chiming in since this decision was made final very recently! 😂

I hear that Checkpoint is going out of business and that they are selling out their remaining RF Date Due and De-tuning supplies. Does anyone else use the Checkpoint security gate system? If so, have you identified a work-around or new product?
