[LIBRARYDIR] donated books

We’ve actually had a few programs close in the last few years where this very situation happened—tenured faculty who had been at the college for decades donated their entire office’s collections to us. We always receive them, use our collection development policy to determine if they will fit into our collection (namely: is it within 10 years of publication, and is it in good condition?), and add it or not. We have a free books cart that we put the donations on that we don’t take. It’s a pretty smooth and mostly automated process.

Subject: [LIBRARYDIR] donated books

Hi all,

I know you're dying for a library deans chat on a Friday afternoon, so here is my question of the day:

Do you limit whether retired professors can donate to the library all the books in their offices from their entire career?

Thanks! Claire
