Hi Jackie:

As a small place with only one associate dean and one librarian for reference and BI, I act as backup for our librarian. She also does the one-offs and teaches the 2-unit library course.

Pre-shutdown we had a more formal schedule where I would cover the reference desk for lunches and other breaks, but now (with declined usage) I’ll back up when someone actually has a reference question and the librarian is not involved. But it’s not huge amounts of time as my librarian is very dependable.

Also back up circ, and spend a lot of time getting out technology early in the quarter. (Although that’s way down with new staff.)

But even though I replaced a full-time position, we have had severe cuts in PT staffing and everyone sort of jumps in wherever needed.

Would also be interested in this discussion as long as it give me ways to promote our value to administration.

Susan

Hi Jackie-

I am like Claire, I am on the Info Desk for 1-2 shifts a week plus as a backup. I only sub for orientations but the librarians do the reference and teaching non-credit.

Hi Jackie,

I do reference and circulation shifts and I sub (~5 hours a week), but I don't do consultations, workshops, or courses. I'm interested in the value of academic libraries conversation as well. Thanks for bringing it up!

Hi all~

I have a thought and also a question.

Let me start with the question....how many of you do reference/research consultations and about what percentage does this take of your time.

Okay, sneaky, second question how many of you still do formal (credit bearing) or informal (one-shot/workshop, etc) instruction as part of your work?

Thinking about part of our conversation last week, I wonder if it would be of interest to discuss the Value of Academic Libraries work? It might be beneficial in light of our conversations on accreditation, workplace roles, program review and the interconnected resources we offer.

If there is interest, I am suddenly missing Deb Gilchrist and maybe she could come of retirement to chat with us for an hour at a future meeting. I'd love to have her as a keynote or guest at an in person meeting—we could make sure she gets lunch.

All my best,
Jacquelyn
