[LIBRARYDIR] Weeding and RCWs Redux

At SVC, we have posted if we are having a major sale. If we end up recycling (GASP) old, out-of-date materials, we have not put an announcement in the paper. We are at the beginning of a major weeding project as well. We have reduced our reference collection and moved some books to the stacks.

Heath,
We are also working on weeding, and I wonder about this RCW and the intent. Is it still relevant?
In our case we have a collection of things that have been weeded long ago - in some cases so long ago as to predate ALMA. In addition to cleaning out the closets, we are weeding reference and incorporating it into the circulating collection, and getting rid of 203-30 year old CDs that have not circulated in the last 5 years. I really can't imagine that a school library would want a 20 -30 year old CD - how would they play it?

Hello:<https://shoreline.edu/>
 <https://shoreline.edu/>
I have scoured the LLC archives for information about weeding materials from our collections and complying with RCWs about offering those materials to the school district via posted announcements in local newspapers. In the past (before we realized the directives of the RCW) we were sending our weeded books and materials to state surplus. <https://shoreline.edu/>

One of our staff made a very good point about the RCW citing libraries, but not clarifying if this applies to public and school libraries only. Would academic/higher ed libraries be included in this? It seems odd to place an ad in our school district for area schools to take our weeded materials as they will be (a) at a higher level and (b) possibly outdated and irrelevant. <https://shoreline.edu/>

We have someone working on our weeding policy and I think this point is an excellent one. Curious what others think.<https://shoreline.edu/>

Thank you!<https://shoreline.edu/>
