[LIBRARYDIR] Front Desk Position

Hi all,

Seattle Central has had graduate reference assistants (RAs) working alongside library faculty for many years. They are never assigned to work in place of library faculty or alone at a reference desk. RAs each work with a library faculty mentor and they get solid academic library experience that prepares them for professional work.

The RA assignment ends upon graduation and we have hired many former RAs as library faculty. Because of the close work with library faculty and the careful assignment of duties, we have never had an issue with the CBA. The RA program has helped us support many emerging academic librarians and has greatly increased diversity among our library faculty.

Somewhat related, our librarians team is looking into hiring grad students to work some of our reference hours, particularly for evenings and weekends. We don't have any experience with setting this up, but have been in communication with Lynn Kanne at Seattle Central where they are running a similar program.

Greetings all,

Our library is finally looking to evolve staffing by hiring a part time front desk position. This would be a position aimed ideally for current grad students who are looking for some library experience before they get their degree, though in theory retirees or other folks could probably do just fine in the position as well. I'm wondering if any of you have something like this??

Key aspects of this role:

  * Support evening and weekend hours when other library staff are unavailable
  * Manage the front desk, including basic circulation, reference, directional, and other visitor-facing needs
  * Occasionally (if interested) support instruction needs in a classroom aid-like capacity
  * Work on special projects as-needed
  *   Hours = 5-10 per week

We also thought it might be a good paid internship position, since grad students tend to move through their programs so quickly.

Thanks for your thoughts!

Greg
