BTC does not charge late fines, but we do charge replacement costs plus a processing fee for materials that are lost. All fees are waived when materials are returned. We do accept patron replacements for missing items, and we will make special returns agreements and/or payment arrangements. To support patrons through the pandemic response, we have been extending circulation periods and we have been renewing items that we do not normally renew (laptops, graphing calculators, etc.).

Thank you so much. I would still love to hear from others, but the information provided so far as been enough to push my executive leadership to move towards a recommendation to move away from punitive measures and towards a more inclusive approach to lending in our library. What the outcome of that will be is yet to be determined, but knowing that so many of you are also doing this work was helpful in my sales pitch. Below is some information one of my librarians found for me. I hope some of you find it helpful.

Again, most of the research appears to me to be from public libs, which are the wider adopters, but...
return rates actually go up. There are FAQ pages, studies, and reports that address this question, should we need them.

Hello,

We are also revising our fine policy.  We have eliminated overdue fines during the pandemic and are weighing fines v getting items back.  Our main concern when we are fully back on ground is getting reserve materials back in a timely fashion.  We are also balancing fees for non-returned items v forgiving the non-return of state property.  We have also raised our threshold for sending patrons to collections - although that is in conjunction with other departments on campus.

Hi Jaclyn,

Last year, we did away with our punitive fines policy for mostly racial equity reasons at RTC. We found that our fining policy drove a wedge between our students and some of our staff. Anecdotally, fines were also disproportionately impacting our students of color on campus, who make up 70% of our student population and most of our borrowers in general. Students have been so much happier with us since we've made this change, and have been more communicative with us than ever before when they need a renewal.

Since we got rid of fines, we are being a lot more proactive and forgiving in getting stuff returned. For example, we will text them through our Signal Vine platform a reminder if their item has gone into late status. Signal Vine has been a super effective way in getting in touch with our students.

For certain classes like our ESL/ELA ones, we've partnered with the instructor to monitor certain limited inventories. If there are books that are extremely late, we mention this generally to the instructor and the instructor will remind their class on how to return their books in on time. We also text the students a reminder. :)

Hi All. Spokane Community College's library department is working on revising our very outdated fines policy that is not student center, and frankly downright punitive. Do any of you have policies that are more in line with our guided pathways/holistic support services/equity work? If you aren't charging fines, what other methods are you using ensuring materials/technology are being returned? I'd really appreciate having some examples to share with my executive leadership.
