[LIBRARYDIR] Changes to Kanopy licensing terms and their impact on the WACTCLC membership

Hi everyone,

I know I am late to this conversation in that this email is from a month ago, and you all discussed Kanopy at the LLC meeting this week. However, I wanted to share our latest email from Nicole. Hopefully this aligns with what others are hearing about Kanopy:

“WACTCLC can continue with the PPU model through FY 2020-2021. Any colleges currently on that model can continue with that model. But because we are no longer upgrading licenses to a one year license (not perpetual although we are offering those licenses come Sept 1st) once you hit the $120 mark in use, I am not recommending this model to your sister colleges. Also, there are limitations with firm ordering and other functions that are only available on the academic model.”

So the gist seems to be we can keep the PPU model this year, but they are not recommending it moving forward. One of the reasons for that is that previously once a popular film (ex: “Race – The Power of Illusion”) hit 60 plays or $120, we owned it for that year. Now there will be no cap, so with our example film, we have 399 plays. That would cost us $798 annually instead of $120. At least this is my understanding.

Hey all,

I just chatted with Nicole about LWTech’s account (she’s awesome—a lot more “on it” than the former rep we had), and I was reassured that there is no end-date for PPU at this time, which is good for us.

I did inquire about a hypothetical consortium-based contract and she said that with their new tiered pricing in PDA, there’s room for negotiations that weren’t previously possible. She also mentioned that we could potentially get a reduced rates if we went in on specific packages (such as California Newsreel). Anyway, I told her I wasn’t speaking for our group but I was appreciative of the knowledge and said someone would probably be in touch with her down the road. She had not heard about WACTCLC before, by the way.

In other news, Kanopy apparently has seen major spikes in usage throughout most (but not all) of the academic customers. They aren’t sure why exactly, but are arguing it’s due to their expansion of content (150-200 titles per month added, apparently).

Amy, Green River does a combination of $2 per view (same person can watch for 3 days, I believe, for one "view") and 1- to 3-year licensing.  We use Microsoft Forms to gather requests from faculty members, asking questions about how many classes, how many students, and how many quarters in a year.  We preemptively license some films but allow others to be accessed with the $2 per view for a much lower price.  It has been working for us.

However, I haven't had a conversation with my collection development librarian and don't know what the unannounced changes are that Wade is talking about!  I will contact my librarian, but are we all on different models?  Thanks, Wade, for starting this conversation.

South Puget Sound Community College has a Kanopy subscription, too, but we may have an entirely different cost structure. Is anyone else on the $2/play contract?

Within the WACTCLC Alma / Primo project meetings and listservs, the issue of unannounced changes to the licensing structures and pricing for Kanopy content have come to light.

This message is addressed to the directors and Alma / Primo leads of the institutions I am currently aware license Kanopy offerings.

And because I don’t have full knowledge of who might have an active relationship with Kanopy, I am cc’ing the WACTCLC governance committee and the public librarydir list as well.

The Alma/Primo staff I work with regularly have expressed interest in exploring a multi-library licensing option with Kanopy, or at least engaging them in a group discussion about licensing practices, and terms and pricing that work or don’t work for WACTC institutions.

I don’t really have the organizational structure or resources to lead that effort within the Alma / Primo project. As well, this conversation goes beyond the institutions on the shared contract, and beyond Alma / Primo staff, to those making content selection and licensing decisions.

My recommendation for those of you with a Kanopy relationship would be to organize a Zoom call among yourselves for an initial internal conversation about desired contract terms and pricing. You could then follow that up with a group call with the Kanopy rep (or reps) with whom you work. You could suggest to them that you all want similar terms on your contract, and tell them what those terms would be. And also explore the possibility of a group contract in which you would all participate.

And I would be happy to participate in those calls with you, as there is overlap with the Alma / Primo project, in terms of platform-related content management and discovery.

To my knowledge, the following institutions have active relationships with Kanopy.

Not included in this list would be those institutions with whom I don’t work, and also institutions I may work with who haven’t chimed in on this question.
