[LIBRARYDIR] ideas/feedback Statewide Database Licensing

Shoreline librarians will want to participate in this conversation.

Unfortunately, they won’t be back on contract until April 3rd.

BUT, I think they’d agree to keep Proquest with a few more databases thrown in; and they are not fond of NewsBank.

Were we really need help is with the streaming services (Kanopy, Swank). It would also be nice if we could support student groups/campus activities with public performance rights of library purchased film.

I would echo what Aryana said in terms of Proquest and Newsbank but our librarians are out for 2 weeks (yes, 2 weeks) of spring break so will have to wait until April 8th to get real input. I would also add to Candice's mention of streaming services - that is our big need. If there was any way to reduce the costs of Kanopy use, we would be very interested in that direction.

Hi Lynn,
I *think* we're happy with ProQuest as is, and with Newsbank. This would more accurately be answered by the Librarians.
I can't speak to which business related database would be the most preferred. If the question comes up again, when the Librarians are back, I'll investigate.

Yay! Vacation!

Hi all:

I just learned that at next Thursday’s Library Council of Washington meeting, we will be discussing the State Library’s database licensing program. I know ProQuest is essential and invaluable for many of us. How is it going for you with NewsBank?

Here’s a prompt from the state librarian, Cindy Aden: “We are in active discussion with ProQuest right now; we have the option of mixing things up and of getting different or additional content if we think it will increase use. We also are talking about Newsbank, of course and looking ahead to the end of the pilot, and Elizabeth Iaukea wants to get a good entrepreneurial, business or career focused db of some kind to foster more economic development. What do you want? Maybe what are you buying now that you think is excellent that should be considered at a state level, where are our gaps, what is on your wish list.”

I’m about to rush off for three days of vacation, but if you have any feedback, please send it my way so I can share it at that meeting. Please email me directly and I’ll do my best to compile for the state library.
