[LIBRARYDIR] On call or sub positions?

BC has a bevy of student help, always supervised by staff and/or librarians.
We do, indeed, do a great deal of training, and have what seems like a great deal of turn over.
We cross-train our students between the Tech Hub and the Circ Desk and have all students essentially ready to do most any task except AV support.
We have 2 regular part-time employees (one of whom is a librarian, and one who has 20+ years’ experience in libraries) who are able to “float” a bit and fill in as needed for circ supervision.
Their primary role is weekend circ supervision on Sundays but they also have regular hours during the week filling out their 16 hrs.
We also have a number of part-time librarians who assist with a variety of hours of reference duty during the week, evenings and during our Sunday hours.

Our Tech Hub/Circ student training has been developed over the last 3 years and delineates Level 1 questions (which students and staff are trained to answer) and Level 2 questions which are reserved for Librarians.

For LWTech, student workers (including work study and the ASG-funded positions) are pivotal to not only our workflow but also our identity and our connection to the student body. They also provide an incredible diversity to the library team on countless levels and are one of top ten reasons I enjoy working here.

It does indeed take a lot of work to bring the students to the level we are looking for, and it’s a fantastic opportunity for skills development (specifically management and team organization) for our techs and librarians (myself included). I would be happy to describe how we train and support our student workers if anyone was curious. It’s a pretty incredible system we have in place (if I may say so!).

We also gave up on work study students several years ago. The time it took to train and supervise them was not worth the work we got from them.

We have an adjunct librarian who is sometimes able to work extra hours. For example our full-time morning/afternoon librarian is out of the country indefinitely for a family emergency, so the adjunct is working five hours a day instead of three. Once we are staffed again, I juggle his hours so by year end he has worked the correct number of contact hours.

I’ve been relying on my classified circ staff to work alone a lot but make sure I am available to help with reference. I also fill in when there are other holes. Because of a current vacancy I’ve been covering my evening librarian’s meal break, but she has been working through her late evening break and Sunday breaks and meal. Not good. I have her keep track of the extra time and we work it out later.

Hello all,
We are facing some staffing crunches at RTC and find our work study students are not a reliable stopgap all the time. Do you ever use on-call or substitute library help? Not even talking about librarians here…..just technical or desk support staff. If you do, I would love to know how it works for your college. I am trying to build up some ideas before I approach our HR department.

Thanks
