[LIBRARYDIR] ideas/feedback Statewide Database Licensing

Lynda.com would be used by my college employees. I am not sure it will be as widely used as other databases.

Skagit is still very attached to ProQuest. Newsbank is getting more use than expected. We still can't see spending the dollars to continue it. If Elizabeth is thinking about a good entrepreneurial database, I would suggest one of the EBSCO business databases. We've added several this year and we're very happy: Business Source Premier, Regional Business News, Regional Business News Plus, and Small Business Reference Center.

Lynda.com would be a welcome addition from North's perspective.

I feel like Lynda.com would be a good fit for this need.

I've always had the impression that Lynda.com catered mostly to things like entry-level MS Office skills.

But my local public library picked up Lynda.com, and I'm really impressed with the content that I've seen. Lots of possibilities in Lynda.com for picking up valuable workplace and career skills, for students and others.

The 'learning and elearning' section of Lynda.com, for example, contains a lot of content that would directly applicable to librarians and faculty looking to build online courses, tutorials, videos, etc.

I would echo what Aryana said in terms of Proquest and Newsbank but our librarians are out for 2 weeks (yes, 2 weeks) of spring break so will have to wait until April 8th to get real input. I would also add to Candice's mention of streaming services - that is our big need. If there was any way to reduce the costs of Kanopy use, we would be very interested in that direction.

Hi Lynn,
I *think* we're happy with ProQuest as is, and with Newsbank. This would more accurately be answered by the Librarians.
I can't speak to which business related database would be the most preferred. If the question comes up again, when the Librarians are back, I'll investigate.

Yay! Vacation!

Hi all:

I just learned that at next Thursday's Library Council of Washington meeting, we will be discussing the State Library's database licensing program. I know ProQuest is essential and invaluable for many of us. How is it going for you with NewsBank?

Here's a prompt from the state librarian, Cindy Aden: "We are in active discussion with ProQuest right now; we have the option of mixing things up and of getting different or additional content if we think it will increase use. We also are talking about Newsbank, of course and looking ahead to the end of the pilot, and Elizabeth Iaukea wants to get a good entrepreneurial, business or career focused db of some kind to foster more economic development. What do you want? Maybe what are you buying now that you think is excellent that should be considered at a state level, where are our gaps, what is on your wish list."

I'm about to rush off for three days of vacation, but if you have any feedback, please send it my way so I can share it at that meeting. Please email me directly and I'll do my best to compile for the state library.
