[LIBRARYDIR] Computing printing

AT CCS, we migrated to Print Manager Plus (PMP)<http://www.printmanager.com/index.htm> to manage our student printing. Students pay a printing fee each quarter and in return, are granted up to $10 in printing credit on their PMP account. The system is installed in both libraries as well as many (most?) labs at SCC and SFCC that have printers. Cost per print varies, with students able to request duplex, b&w, or color printing depending on their needs and how frugal they want to be.

Printing costs 2 cents per page for black and white, and 7 cents per page for color. Students automatically receive a $10 printing credit per quarter, which covers approximately 200 singled-sided pages or 400 double- sided.

When students exceed their quarterly printing quota, they can buy more credits at the library circulation desks (we have cash registers to track funds) or the Cashiers Office. If students purchase prints, any unused funds roll over to the new quarter. Ideally, I would like to see the online module installed which would allow students to purchase prints using their credit/debit cards.

For non-students, we have a Guest Printing account that we can use to provide printing. We charge a flat rate of $.10 a page paid for at the circ desk, which is collectable as staff needs to sign guests into the account.

IT manages the PMP software and Student Services manages the student printing account. The library staff maintains the library printers, ordering supplies (using the student fee budget number), calling for repairs when necessary, and generally keeping the equipment running,

One of the major benefits of PMP is that it uses a release station AND also allows students to send print jobs to college-owned printers from their own devices. This was a feature the librarians were really interested in providing and one of the reasons we were happy to move to the new system. With over 60 desktops in use at each library, having release stations helps make sure students get their print jobs and not anyone else’s.

I missed the last piece on non-campus users, sorry.
Again, BC uses papercut. We have only a single stand up computer which has a generic login which prints to the circulation desk. (15 cents per page copied).
[We have 24 open PC computers, 1 stand up/stand-alone catalog unit (no print capacity), 15 macs, and 36 units in our teaching lab.]
We do have a cash drawer, for which we do a daily deposit.
All persons using our single generic login can only print to circ and all must pay for those copies as that unit login is not connected to papercut.
FYI, we probably make less than $1 per day from that printing.

We have a set of 8 computers that the community can use for internet or printing. They have access to printing just like our regular students. We use a very antiquated program called Envisonware that is a print release client. I have been desperately trying to do away with this system and am hopeful the college is going to move towards more of something like papercut where students have money in an account they pull from. Our current printing situation is cash only. The printer has a coin/dollar tower attached and students/community send their print jobs over under a unique code they assign the job, then put coins into the tower and it prints their documents. .05$ for black and white and .50$ for color. We do keep a small cashbox locked up in order to make change if someone has a large bill.

Hello all,

If you have community using your computers, how do you provide printing? We have been selling printer points in the Library but we won’t be able to keep our cash register/cash fund after this quarter so we are trying to come up with alternatives. We can send them to the cashier, but they are not open the same hours as the Library so this will mainly impact those coming in during evening and weekend hours. We have a generic printing account so we may be able to use this, but would need to set up some parameters so people don’t take advantage of this. If you have protocols for a generic account, those would be useful also.

Thanks,
Erica
