[LIBRARYDIR] IPEDS Data

Greetings everyone, from ELUNA. I am about to attend a specific session on IPEDS and Alma Analytics. The folks leading this session are quite brilliant (I was just in another analytics session with them). I look forward to sending folks some information on this when I've gone through it-it seems like we're not the only ones who are thinking about streamlining data collection in Alma in this way.

It might be helpful to consolidate notes and talking points ahead of time. Perhaps a good opportunity to make use of the collaborative functionality of the new Google Drive?

Good point, Jane.  I used to include expenditures only in the 051 program code, but was surprised one year to find the business office had included the 151 program code.  I now include it.  This is a trust fund that has no allocations, but I spent money out of it so, there you go.  I don't have media, but I did check to see if we had any money in 052 or 053 so I wouldn't be surprised by media expenditures in IT that could be counted against the library.

For those of you who may not have seen the Age of Collection Report I used to get from Millennium, I have attached a template for it.  We're Dewey so those of you on LC would have a different range across the top.  I think I would also want a column for ebooks so they are not lumped in with fiction and reserves.

I agree. A list of vetted, standardized Alma reports to use would save all of us time and would make our data more comparable. Plus we need to determine the standard answer about what expenses/departments we need to include. I have to include media services in the IPEDS according to the Controller who consulted with the SBCTC. Many times our library pricing can be dependent on our IPEDS data, such as the cost to join WLA as an institution, plus it does not give an accurate picture of the library's budget.

I am excited to see the Age of Collection Report that Wade has created. I hope all went well with your visit, Mindy.

I think it would be very useful to have standard reports in Alma that can generate the needed information for IPEDS.  The instructions in IPEDS are very detailed and I am not sure we have a lot of interpretation wiggle-room.  However, having a report that provides print circulation only (removing computer circulation) and a report that provides the total number of print titles, would be extremely helpful.  In the three years since the Academic Library Survey became a standard part of the annual IPEDS report, they have changed parts of it each year.  That is part of the challenge.

I am just finishing up our 7-Year accreditation visit today.  One report requested that caught us off-guard was an Age of Collection Report.  In Millennium (a system with which our evaluator was familiar) this report is canned and easy to access.  Not so, Alma.  Wade worked very hard last night devising an Age of Collection Report.  I am very grateful to him.  This report is very useful for collection development and to support budget requests.  I think it would be helpful to have this report available to all of us.  Our evaluator was happy.  Kudos to Wade!

Greetings,

At one of this week's WACTCLC meetings, a report was reviewed in Alma that was developed outside of Washington for another academic library's IPEDS data needs. It struck a lot of folks on that call as a potentially useful way of streamlining data collection for IPEDS that is otherwise a hassle to harvest.

Anyway, Sally Heilstedt and I spoke about how it might be an appropriate conversation to have with LLC-that is, how IPEDS data submission can be interpreted in multiple ways and how it might be valuable to have some kind of baseline/universal description of what WA libraries are submitting, and even an agreed-upon Alma report for even further standardization.

My question is: if this does fall under LLC's purview and interest, then where and when do we have this conversation?
