[LIBRARYDIR] Need Stories Today before 3 pm!: BAS Library Stories Document

Hi Vivienne,

At the Seattle Colleges, our situation is that each of the three colleges have and are continuing to develop BAS programs independently of each other in accordance with targeted needs. The "problem" is two-fold: 1) often during the BAS development process library resources and information literacy staffing are not included in the budget planning; 2) subject specific resources necessary for a particular BAS program are often expensive, making it a challenge to subscribe as a district since the campuses without the program cannot really afford to put funds towards an extraneous resource. Solution to the first part is for BAS program development stakeholders to make sure the Library Dean is at the table. Part two might potentially be ameliorated by the Consortium taking on the cost of more general shared resources, thus freeing up funds for subject specific resources at the campus level.

thanks for asking,

Aryana

Vivienne, I don’t know how to add my story to the doc on the wiki, but I can just give it to you here. It’s a positive story, which I thought might be helpful as an example of what campuses should be doing instead of what, it seems, many are doing.

At Tacoma CC we have a BAS in HIM and one in development in Community Health. Both have involved the library in the planning of those programs by:

· bringing us in on stakeholder conversations throughout the program development

· allowing us to work collaboratively with program faculty to determine appropriate and sufficient library resources

· allowing us to review the curriculum and determine where information literacy instruction is needed. In the HIM program, the library developed an LS301 research class that aligns specifically with the HIM curriculum. We are doing the same with Community Health

· making sure that the library is a required element of the curriculum committee process, so that library resources and support are vetted appropriately

· providing the library with a budget for any library resources that we need to purchase for those BAS programs

· providing the library with a budget for the development of and teaching of the LS301 class

I am very appreciative of the inclusivity in our BAS development here at Tacoma. I know that having a strong library presence in those programs benefits the students greatly and makes those programs more successful overall.

That’s my story – a good one! ;)

Deans,
I realize this was a short turn around so no one has yet to add stories to the document I placed up on the wiki.

I’m actually at the BLC meeting now. And present at 3 pm.
So to cut to the chase, if you have a story, can you email me now?

Story brief – brief analysis of problem – suggestion for solution brief
All told I’m just looking for maybe 4-6 sentences – a brief paragraph.
If I could just get a couple of people to respond, I’d be delighted.

Thanks!
Vivienne
