[LIBRARYDIR] library support of BA degrees

FYI – Lisa tells me we made a few mistakes in our answers.
Here’s the corrected version care of Lisa Lapointe, our BAS Librarian:

Bellevue College Library is more deeply involved in capstone projects. For two of the programs, it is a requirement for students completing a Capstone to have a research appointment with a librarian. They are still working on funding. There is still education necessary for programs on what resources are needed and what they cost. They are also working on connections between the library and programs. Students need support from the beginning of the program through thoughtful preparation—especially CTE students. Define indirect costs and be sure where library is supported. Percentage assessment for each support service. Look for grant dollars for library. Have online resources. Have librarians visit classroom so students know him/her, or, increasingly for hybrid and online programs, have librarians embedded into learning management system. Make sure students have contact information. At North Seattle College each BAS program pays 50% of a librarian salary to support their program. (There are three programs and each has their own dedicated librarian.) Consider Skype or Adobe Connect to give a more personal touch. Allow for annual increases to costs. (TurnitIn.com will see a 33% increase next year.)

Candice,
I would add that I wish the LLC would consider drafting some letter to all the 2 year administrations on support for libraries re: growth of new BAS programs.
If we could do this, we’d all have a strong foundation for our requests for funding and personnel rather than each creating the wheel.
We have 1 full time librarian (FT Temp) for BAS programs. I’m asking for it to be made full time. We currently have 7 BAS programs with 4 more in thepipeline.
And so far only 1 program has dedicated funds coming to the library; the inaugural BAS program that technically receives state-support as opposed to being self-support. The initial amount was $10k, but in following years it has been reduced to $7k. (I’m not sure what the history is on that).

It is important to learn about the proposals before submission to ensure you seriously discuss library support and materials before approval. Many programs do not know what they need or the costs associated. It is also good to band together with student support as there are many support structures needing additional funding with these new programs.

Our BAS Director, Chris Bell is meeting with our VP of instruction and accounting to find out how to get the submitted budget line items to stream into areas it was intended to fund. The campus curriculum committee paperwork has a section for library sign-off for any new courses, including BAS. I want to require sustained funding from each new BAS program for ongoing costs for material and personnel. At least that’s the plan.

Thank you, Mindy and Vivienne, for your notes and comments. Very helpful. I’ll be sure to pass along anything I learn from my involvement here at TCC.

Our proposal requires a signature from the library – I want to require sustained funding from each new BAS program for ongoing costs for material and personnel. At least that’s the plan.

Hi Candice,

I wrote up my notes from the conference and I attended the session that included library services. I’ve attached the notes to this email. Erica and Vivienne also attended. Vivienne sat on the panel to represent library services. Either of them may have a different perspective.

Hello, I was wondering if any of you attended the recent WA conference on BA degrees at CTCs and if so, what the conversation was around library support/involvement. I’m sitting on a committee about BA development at Tacoma CC starting next week and would love to have some background on the current discussion or any resources that you have for a foundation.

Much thanks for your help!
