Funded projects must be designed to improve student outcomes and generate knowledge about how to better serve students that will be useful to other organizations. All projects that receive funding must measure their impact with one or more of the following outcome indicators:

  * Reduce the percentage of low-income high school students who trigger Early Warning Indicators - attendance under 90%, course failure, and/or suspension/expulsion.
  * Increase the percentage of high school students who complete Algebra II with a grade of C or higher.
  * Increase the rate of high school graduates who directly enroll in postsecondary education.
  * Increase the rate of students at two-year colleges who are placed into English and math courses by measures that are alternatives to standardized tests. Examples include placement based on high school GPA, Bridge to College completion, and directed self-placement tools.
  * Increase the percentage of students who earn their first college-level credits in English or math within one year of college enrollment.

Small school districts and rural communities face unique challenges to improving the college readiness of their low-income high school students. Applicants are invited to propose plans and projects that are the best fit for their high schools, school districts, and communities. Some of the strategies that have shown promise at improving college readiness include:

  * Reform to school discipline policies and practices, including alternatives to suspension
  *   Data-driven attendance campaigns
  * Improved access to Advanced Placement (AP) courses or other methods of earning college credit in high school coupled with improved supports for low-income students in those courses
  * Professional development opportunities that are well-defined, sustained, and collaborative.

Streamlining math pathways at Clark College

The majority of Washington's high school graduates are required to take remedial math in college. This increases the time it takes students to move toward a college degree, requires students to use valuable financial aid on course work for which they can earn no college-level credits, and dramatically reduces the chance that a student will earn a degree: fewer than half of the students who take remedial math go on to graduate from college.
In an effort to improve student success in math, Clark College introduced a streamlined pre-college sequence and college-level corequisite learning to help students fulfill their math requirements quicker and more effectively. For more details, watch the video Accelerating Success - Clark College is re-inventing how it teaches math with Guided Pathways<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001jpZ8IwzEnH1fJ_40AmWLqCgRGdC42q29zxALkYRe72eijUacr1NwOLSL6EDFKo1gAoQVORlMlDA9kV82qDDZrQRWRN9tZU16tMrBeeDJ1OuVAQyvimT0zW5eSEeeSa2_CofGRhdEIoYH3zBDMHWXS9Oes6oF4c1-cjnalm8KT0Dfka1bn8QjkEDT4e0AU8uGP25DwIcYQGKXP3fpTY85NNSn76Y5GfAuQSllBxtdmEVhbz4w4JMnDTkB-vA_Uvh3V2tJIWVv4R62LxMRvR1GBPlBivfebwD1MzzL78IJV5vADkP2T1PC6Hj95PqWhggvXvVffep52r_bf5wyxKTyt6MXlkZumpZrjBvuo9HZVN8FE2CJzugLjs39IKKGgx2G&c=9x-hdN-merRs1kUCWmC7P8C9PFwIqCi7l1p9rhGIIpC5xaGmorGW3A==&ch=EGMHDeLWtk1ZCvmQ5ibZ3r9k8_oGqFaGfNyu60DQJJkL8YS_aulwaA==>.

Student Success Guide

More than 740,000 jobs openings are coming to Washington state. Most will be filled by workers who have a post-high school credential, such as a degree, apprenticeship, or certificate. Students have questions about how they can best set themselves up for success after high school. Planning and taking actions through middle and high school will support students on their path to fulfilling their career dreams.

Check out the Student Success Guide<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001jpZ8IwzEnH1fJ_40AmWLqCgRGdC42q29zxALkYRe72eijUacr1NwOLSL6EDFKo1gW8wQQWDioHGsVHYpv81uhhEDtrJQI4M9LOsTIi7PW4tsCKMp9VCPQUehvX9aNGTqVmHZc1pT9UbaJa0ffY_v5cqjg8Xc-iSF0tUTdNVdWKplNmFp5VVWosrWYAcSRql8MFIfNmnz31nB1gP28mUOPfPDVHwC390kZn7mgHGqedS169WEal7TG3Rt6lkxg37A-xbuURt_q1kgDJbWH6CbcZWH0HLWsiCxof3Gbd04tL81zGPd6ZGmOnMfmSh1TbDVkHFFQxNzhlriOWSAaKcxqvrjgEUOCaNiLCDummgJNVRIEy8PsEiVqwqnseUnbQy1Y07M50JU3UOONZJz6Mavi8ffpqrTEgpE0eFtPQwyQwFD6x_RZSNnNw==&c=9x-hdN-merRs1kUCWmC7P8C9PFwIqCi7l1p9rhGIIpC5xaGmorGW3A==&ch=EGMHDeLWtk1ZCvmQ5ibZ3r9k8_oGqFaGfNyu60DQJJkL8YS_aulwaA==>, developed by Partnership for Learning, with common questions and list of action items for students to consider in each grade level. Here are three ways to put this tool into action:

  1. Use it to guide conversations with the students in your life.
  2. Print it out and hang it up in a place where students can refer to it.
  3. Share it with the adults in your life who support and guide students.

Basics about State Learning Standards and Assessments

Washington state learning standards define what all students should know and be able to do at each grade level. This fact sheet<http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001jpZ8IwzEnH1fJ_40AmWLqCgRGdC42q29zxALkYRe72eijUacr1NwOLSL6EDFKo1gU28sZ6pE5xbYd865InhbTZ-2dDeHiSLGMfucSkzA0xaE39Wz_JxzqNtey3QrYYdlMNIlI1tjInRx7HWu3bgjmnoPUlFslEFQwSuyGen7B7kDrvpDUGIlHcNAozYaDaiNFD9cztcuMw3nOB3BLVFfaUQ1or2VjtW1mQyzUvOcSiB7JRTpG3dhf9xENj9QCZwOyG5j-9AhvBaXhyHTclDE1FNj4gpv-nqme6EDUu3OkVUcwDFNoyK2tMmbo1V8kHhN0LXUdtk6hW0uXaXpVjLuwAS9H-HxYzUxUXiI5i6aTzxksxkSVMXDMUy_q25IDP2T82Mt0z8SVtGzGfQ6bBTttshhyv5EvbrIMH-mPrlUKNcU5riNvzZMuruHVn7QhvyY&c=9x-hdN-merRs1kUCWmC7P8C9PFwIqCi7l1p9rhGIIpC5xaGmorGW3A==&ch=EGMHDeLWtk1ZCvmQ5ibZ3r9k8_oGqFaGfNyu60DQJJkL8YS_aulwaA==>, available in 16 languages, provides key information about the standards and assessments, why they are important, and how parents can support their students.

Below are the top five facts about the standards and assessments:

  1. Real world skills - Washington's learning standards and assessments focus on real-world skills that students are learning and practicing in the classroom every day such as critical thinking, problem solving, and writing.
  2. Closing gaps - The assessments help identify achievement gaps and allow schools districts and the state to direct resources where they are needed the most.
  3. Testing is just one measure - State testing is one of several indicators, in combination with report cards, teacher feedback, and classroom work used to create a complete picture of a student's progress in school.
  4. The right stuff - The state's learning standards and aligned assessments are designed to prepare students for college, work, and life.
  5. Accessible for all students - The tests are designed to accommodate all students, including those with disabilities and English language learners.
