Dear members of the ATC, IC, and Guided Pathways Listserv:

I’m pleased to announce that the newly formed community of practice (CoP) for deans and department chairs will have a special spring meeting at the Assessment, Teaching, and Learning Conference on May 1, 2019, from 1:30 PM to 5:00 PM. This workshop will take on a special topic of instructional leadership especially relevant to successfully implementing guided pathways and increasing retentions, completions, and closing equity gaps: “Serving Faculty, Serving Students.”

Please spread the word to instructional deans and to your department chairs about this very special pre-conference workshop.

Facilitators: Father-Daughter Dean Extraordinaires Marty and Sally Heilstedt. Marty currently serves as a dean at Pierce and Sally is a dean at Lake Washington.

Full Description
In your current role, you may be wondering what exactly it is you signed up for. You thought you’d be helping shape the culture of your departments and divisions, having lots of conversations about student success and faculty excellence—mentoring faculty through one-to-one conversations about their goals, targeting areas they want to work on . . . and creating really exciting and meaningful professional learning opportunities for faculty to develop and grow in their chosen profession. And yet you feel like all you do is manage student complaints and grade appeals and scheduling. You’re exhausted by the mundane work and the nagging thought that you feel so far away from your vision.

This session will argue that the most rewarding part of being a dean is staying engaged in what happens in the classroom through creating faculty development opportunities. Intentionally offered as part of this conference, consider this an invitation to return to a core notion of your professional identity: an educator deeply and intrinsically motivated by a passion for excellence in teaching and learning. During this workshop, you’ll enjoy dedicated time to talk about the heart of our work: how to best mentor our faculty colleagues and find meaningful ways to support faculty as they support students. Hear from faculty voices sharing what they most need in terms of support, as well as the experiences of deans and department chairs about how they respond to the voices of their faculty and support them through major initiatives around teaching and learning. Come and celebrate the good work happening around the state with dean and department-chair led faculty development . . . and leave with multiple models to consider implementing on your campus.

Peace,

Jen
