[GuidedPathways] coding & tracking students in program of study

Hi Jesse,

Not sure this is a quick solution, but here’s some information from a coding recommendation that the Research and Planning Commission (RPC) developed for Legacy. Hope this helps in some way.

Best Regards,
Tom

“In order to implement the many-to-many logical relationship between educational programs and pathways, and educational programs and degrees, colleges will need to split some educational programs into two or more parts, using either the fourth digit of career and technical education program codes or different alpha codes for academic educational programs. For example, if a college has decided to put their AA-DTA, as the most common transfer degree, into three meta-majors – Creative and Communication Arts; Public Service, Society & Education; and Healthcare and Biosciences, the college would create three educational program codes as follows:

EPC

Degree Title

Program Title

Meta-major

AACC

Associate in Arts DTA

AA/DTA – Creat & Comm Arts

CCA

…

…

AAPS

Associate in Arts DTA

AA/DTA – Pub Serv

PS

…

…

AAHB

Associate in Arts DTA

AA/DTA – Health & Bioscience

HB

…

…

Special care should be taken when setting up new EPCs to ensure that the degree awarded to the student is the same in each case.”

Hi Jesse.
Many years ago, a previous registrar had developed a bunch of EPC's that are for transfer degrees. Sociology vs Math Vs Biology Vs Physical Education, etc etc. Of course, we have the state issued EPCs for the Prof Tech and other assigned programs.
When a student applies for admissions, we code both SM2001 and SM700A with that EPC. We've mapped those EPCS to our Guided Pathways, and have created homegrown "G" codes (one for each pathway). That G code goes into SM5003 as an unusual action. That way, we can pull by Pathway, as well as be able to know who has told us what program of study they are interested in following.
It's important to note - we don't use these EPCs for transfer degrees when awarding degrees. We only award one Direct Transfer.
Hope that helps.

Hello,

Question for the group. Have you developed a way to code and track students in programs of study? If so can you please share the solution your college has developed?

Context. SBCTC is helping us figure out tracking and coding Areas of Study (meta majors) within the legacy system, but we’re finding a big need to quickly figure out how to code and track students as the select programs of study within Areas of Study. Some programs are closely aligned with their degree, but other degrees serve multiple programs. For instance we have many social science and humanities programs based on the AA-DTA degree, but coding for that degree doesn’t’ help us know which programs a student might actually be pursing.

So please respond if your college has developing or is in the process of developing a way to track which students are in which programs.

Thanks
