Faculty: What does it mean to teach your discipline during this time of crisis?

The pandemic has moved instruction fully online. The tragic, needless, senseless deaths of Mr. George Floyd, Trayvon Martin, Tamir Rice, Michael Brown, Eric Garner, Philando Castile, Breonna Taylor and many Black lives, calls us to individual and collective action.

Now is the time to rethink everything, absolutely everything, about how we teach what we teach.

panOpen, an OER-based courseware platform, is launching a summer webinar series with this specific historical moment in mind: Each webinar will be focused on a specific discipline and facilitated by a subject matter expert.

More details below.

Dear Jennifer,

What does it mean to teach your subject area during a time of crisis? If your course is now online or blended, what tools and materials will you use to facilitate the new environment? How will you introduce students to your field while including materials that are relevant to our twin crises of health and race relations?

To address these questions among others, panOpen<https://panopen.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=ed4d78d18c65494a62b5ce4d6&id=a6b8f60731&e=cc076a0fab>, an OER-based courseware platform is launching the summer webinar series, “Teaching in a Time of Crisis.” Each webinar will be focused on a specific discipline, with some of the strongest scholars and teachers presenting their views. Our first webinar, “Teaching Sociology in a Time of Crisis” will be led by Shamus Khan, Professor and Chair of the Department of Sociology at Columbia University.

Thanks,
